They're not telling the whole story here.....

Littered with unneccesary references to value, luxury etc and inaccurate.......Oundle in Norfolk.....priceless! Lazy journalism with a judgemental edge but par for the course for that rag. Hopefully family and friends won't see it.

It does make me realise that when you read some journalism that is based on something you know a little about (e.g. the value of the boat ... £450k gets you an old style 62 GT circa 2007 ... new style ones like True Blue are £800k plus), and they get so much wrong, the same level of accuracy probably applies to everything else they write, except we don't have the facts to hand to refute the other rubbish that is thrown together and published.

Fully agree - there have been numerous sailing / boatyard articles recently in both newspapers and online where it's clear that the person writing it doesn't have a clue about the subject and I can see that if it's on a subject where I have some understanding, then how accurate is the rest of the stuff they write.

Police have released more details....apparently the man who lost his life lived in the next street from us. So desperately sad for his family.

It is desperately sad.

I had a thought about how this could happen and it occurred to me that these little tenders will have no steering when the throttle is off, and regardless of steering angle continue in a straight line, requiring you - quite unnaturally to have to power on possibly quite hard to make a last moment correction. It could well have been a last moment panic back off the throttle and turn that contributed to this accident. Very similar things happen frequently with jetskis.

Another sad accident involving a RIB.
The newspaper reports give credit to the emergency services who, especially the volunteer lifeboat crews, deserve full recognition for who would have been an testing operation.
This was a major incident involving HM Coastguard, Hampshire Police, two life boats and medical services. It should be reported. Many people have a keen interest in such events and any lessons that can be learnt.
A full investigation and report will be made by the MAIB - the Marine Accident Investigation Branch.

Of course it should be reported, but with relevant info

Is the value of the anchored boat relevant? Would he have lived if the boat had been worth less?
You want things to be highlighted for safety improvement, but the journo's just want a sensationalist story.

There's nothing wrong with saying that it was a tender to a luxury power boat, it just shouldn't be the headline.

At some point (not sure if now is the right time) it would be interesting to understand the moral and legal liabilities that charter operators have with regard to guest use of jetski's and tenders.

Just like the bankers, politicians, etc. etc. it's market led - what people want, not what they say they want...
