At the weekend I saw a boat advertised on TheYachtMarket.com that I was interested in and used their 'email seller' tab to ask some questions.

The seller duly responded with answers to my questions which is fine, but I've also started to get unsolicited emails urging me to hurry to get a special discounted build slot on a completely different type of boat from a completely different company.

I've spoken to a director of TheYachtMarket who's confirmed they've captured my details and are now using it to forward unsolicited emails from other companies and would have continued to do so. As i've now made it very clear to them that this isn't appreciated they've agreed to remove my details but ordinarily this wouldn't be the case.

I take a dim view of companies who do this without permission and suggest that anyone who likewise gets fed up with their inbox filling up with junk mail either avoid using this company altogether, or to make contact with the selling broker directly and not via the on-screen tab.

ps I did ask the director for his private address so that I could pass it on to various tradesmen who'd be interested in contacting him to sell him their services and strangely he was very unhappy with the suggestion.....yet this is exactly what he does with my and your private email address'!

The personal data protection legislation govern this. Problem is that many does not know or respect this. 2018 will see a completely new European rule set that, among others, ban implicit consent.

This puts an end to eg. Apple terms updates of 86+ pager where you click Agree at the end and effectively have given consent to anything - and unlimited amounts of it.

I've not had this in particular, but my luck in contacting brokers from Yacht Market or Yacht World for that matter is very poor so I use it to find the broker's' own website and go from there. It's not a good experience. Maybe they haven't caught on yet that the buyers are the people they have to attract and retain. I use adblock which also might stop some harvesting of details as you use the site.

A Director at TheYachtMarket has spoken to the User at length about this issue and has removed their details from our database (as requested).

After an internal investigation, we have ascertained that the issue stemmed from a deployment to our web service, this was quickly rectified and replaced with an “opt in” service which has been rolled out across our website.

At TheYachtMarket, we treat customer and user data securely and we apologise for this error. We have taken further steps to ensure this doesn’t happen in the future.

For the avoidance of any doubt, TheYachtMarket does send emails on behalf of relevant third parties to our mailing list; however these third parties are carefully selected and the emails are sent from our system ensuring the third parties do not have access to the user data at any time. We also provide our users with the option to opt out of receiving these third party emails.
