I have an old engine driven compressor fridge made by thermocool. I know it needs the hoses renewing and refilling with a legal alternative to freeon. I also suspect that the seals in the compressor are not perfect as the last owner said he had to refill the system every year or so. Is it worth bothering with? Does anyone have any knoiwledge of these antique but I suspect rather good systems?

I would suspect that allthe work to be done (refilling with freon, changing seals and may be part of the pipes could well amount to the price of a new engine driven ompresor: I suggest You check how the compressor is connected to the piping carring the gas to the evaporator, as most makers hav specific and proprietary connectors, so it is not obvious to excange compressor A with compressor B.
If I were in the positio, I would also consider changing the evaporator plate and substitute it with a cool accumulating panel; the above specially if prolonged and blue water use is intebded.
Cheers,
