Up She Rises Part Two

Since the first report of the bi-annual inspection and make amend, Steve and I have been doing mundane jobs like cleaning and rubbing down the paintwork in the cockpit, this is now completed, during this time having found the prop shafts rattling about in the P brackets we have been taking advise from all comers as to will they do? Or do we remove and replace them the consensus was and I have to agree was that we replaced them. So today the three of us joint owners set out to remove the worn cutless bearings and do the anti fouling in one day. The port side was a doddle, both grub screws came out and the bearing gave in to the gentle tap of a four pound club hammer on our “patented” 8 inch long sawn in half scaffold tube acting as drift. The Starboard one though proved to be a bit problematic one of the grub screws refused to move and the Allen key socket got rounded so the only recourse was to drill it out, in trying to keep the same dimension hole we managed to break the drill bit in the hole, so the hole had to get bigger, eventually we could see the shaft through the hole and reckoned it would now come out given the hammer and drift treatment, WRONG. No amount of belting with the hammer would move the bearing, so we devised a Heath Robinson “Puller” and it reluctantly gave way, but only about 1” poked out of the P bracket and that was enough to get the man sized stilsons on and with MAN on the handle Mick extracted the bearing kicking and screaming all the way, the bearing not Mick he had no energy to waste by screaming. Following a short break we masked her up and laid on the anti foul, doesn’t take long with three of us. We removed the tape before we left ( SAVES A LOT OF AGGRO) and left her sitting there quite pretty. All that is required now is new cutless bearings and a thread tapped in the P bracket and the propellers fitted, after their refurb on Monday.
