There\'s a hole in his seagull..........

My latest project is to make the neighbours featherweight seagull run, before his blood pressure explodes. I've stripped and rebuilt the carb 3 times but still can't get the mixture into the combustion chamber.
There is a 2 mm hole, 5 mm from the top of the float chamber which I think maybe the problem.
I've been playing with seagulls for over 40 years(its not illegal!) but cannot remember a similar hole.
Is the problem my memory or is this a unique seagull.
As usual all advice gratefully received.

p.s. for those new to boating I'm talking about outboards please don't call the RSBP.

Re: There\'s a hole in his seagull..........

I have a fetherweight which only ran out of the water. Im told that when its in the water that causes back pressure in the exhaust which stops it starting from cold!
Later i found a larger modle secondhand which wouldent run!On that i just had to turn the carb float around to its proper position, since then i have the opposit problem,it wont stop!!

Ive been told to change the throtle cable if i cant adjust the one on it,which i havent done,it can be amusing comeing along side grabing the flywheel only for it to start again when let go!The other way is to shut the choke.

When ive finished my coffee and bread ill wander back to the boat and look at my seagull workshop manual

OK ive looked at my workshop manual but cant see what you mean?i have to peddle off shopping but after lunch ill peddle back to a workshop where i saw a couple of seagulls one was a 40 fetherweight and have a look at the beast its self!I know the people in the yard so they wont mind me takeing it apart a bit!!I hope!!

That hole is the overflow! But i seem to remember you have to have the flote properly lined up thats what i want to look at,otherwise make sure its all clean.Seagulls will always start in the workshop even if they wont run for long!

On other two strokes if im haveing a problem i squirt some fule into the carb inlet if that dosent work i heat the plug on a gas stove then put it back squirt again that normally gets the fule arriving if not!!!

Re: There\'s a hole in his seagull..........

the hole in the float chamber is the vent. this is normal (it allows petrol to leak into the boot of the car)

i have had quite a few of these, they're a great little engine, but rely on a good crank case seal. it's only a possibility, but check the crank case seals, as leaks here will cause all manner of running problems.

also, the filter in the tap (take out the tap to check), muck in the needle valve seat/pipe, blocked exhaust (check for mice etc)

more help available if you contact John at saving seagulls.co.uk or simmilar (google it)

only replaced mine as the children would be using it and little fingers/open flywheel was deemed a trip to the hospital waiting to happen.

i still keep my old silver century as a spare, wouldn't part with it.....

unless someone offered me what it's worth... £20?

good luck, steve.

Re: There\'s a hole in his seagull..........

Its worth £100 if its going.I paid half that at the secondhand shop in Toulon (France)about 8 years ago and the prices havent got less not even for an old seagull.

In fact Italians love them just becouse they look so "traditional" That shop still has several mostly very large models with FWR? At least they had a clutch.

I carry my seagull as a spare for the canals becouse it has a longer shaft than a small torhatsu anyway those new super light gfreat little motors.

Re: There\'s a hole in his seagull..........

The hole is used in the starting procedure. Open the fuel tap under the tank, then prime the carb. This is done by pressing the 'tickler' button on top of the carb until fuel comes out of the hole. Thus you know the float chamber is full. Choke as necessary and away you go - hopefully!

Re: There\'s a hole in his seagull..........

Many thanks experts for your excellent response, but this seagull is being returned to the keeper and I don't care about his blood pressure!

regards,

David.
