There is no such thing as stupid question.....

I have been "lurking" on the forum for some time before registering, and sometimes it was a bit daunting to see some quite agressive exchanges. However I think it has calmed down over recently.

It seems to me that abuse for abuse sake is simply unacceptable, and the post will rightly be deleted.

However when a poster comes in and makes assertions (rights of way for example) which horrifies those who know the rules, and more importantly have concerns about safety, then it is right to "howl" in protest. Emphasis to make the point, rather than abuse I think is what is happening.

Keep it coming I say, but think twice about name calling.

I think it gets much worse when several people jump on the bandwagon, not want to simply say "hear hear", each trying to say something different or more outrageous than the last, so a sharp reprimand can end up as a rude slagging off. It's a bit sad that the human "mob instinct" can manifest itself even when we're only connected to each other by our keyboards.

I just read through the anchor light thread mentioned at the start, it makes sense if you look at the posting times, assume people started drinking at opening time and remember that John Ships Cat is not in the same hemisphere. What started off as a genuine disagreement dissolves into a slagging match in some quarters, and peters out once a sober person makes a sensible and non-confrontational summary.

Mind you it would have been less fun if everyone had behaved sensibly in the first place. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It is different to a pub debate as no-ne can tell if you're serious or joking in a forum.

Very true, but also in pub or club the debate is between only those present within the 4 walls. On here, all the other members get to 'hear' it and join in too, not to mention Joe Public.
