Theoretically Speaking

You are a yacht seven miles off shore, sails rolled away / stowed, engine on tick-over fishing with rod & line.

Not always maintaining a 360 lookout as you might be below (heads, tea, food etc).

What should you display (if anything)?

As a power-driven vessel, a single black cone/point downwards - and lights appropriate to length for a PDV during hours of darkness and in conditions of reduced visibility.

There are no 'lets' regarding the absolute obligation to maintain a lookout at all times by all available means. If you're not doing it in the above circumstances, for any reason, you're in breach of the Regs.

this might an angels dancing on the head of a pin view, but my understanding is with that of Electrosys. If a vessel is fishing, by whatever means, AND is not restricted, then a double cone is required. Additional signals (outside this thread) relate to extent and direction of the fishing gear where appropriate.

The "motoring" cone used by a sailboat is linked visually to the fishing cones, and the double cones use probably stems from the time when my ancestors steamed out of Grimsby till they reached the grounds, then added a steadying sail as they driftnetted the herring.

I concur with m'learned OB that Colregs goes to immense pains to avoid confusing or conflicting signals causing doubt or uncertainty. We need to support that clarity.

You are a power driven vessel, underway not making way.

So no day shapes you have no sails up so need for cones.

If you want to become "special" stick some sail up heave to then you are a sailing vessel and relevant rules apply.

Done properly you will not roll so much and, save fuel .
