Largely excellent day in Lyme Regis yesterday.

Couple of nice mobos to check out: a TSDY on a mooring and a Targa 50(ish) on a pontoon.

Cobb Arms under new management as a gastro-pub run by a brilliant bunch of enthusiastic youngsters: fish curry - ace!

Only marred whilst proceeding in a generally westerly direction along the front when an unruly gang of seagulls swooped, first knocking swmbo's icecream from her hand and then I got the same treatment: my cornetto gone for a burton and a split lip into the bargain. The brutes were roughly the size of vultures as well: a diet of soleros and chips seems to be producing a superstrength version of the creatures.

They are a plague where we are too. Tourists feed them. That where the problems begin.

You probably came across Herring Gulls which are rather large and round here are quite aggressive.
Unfortunately they are a protected species though God knows why. It seems all places around Lyme Bay are plagued by them and they carp on everything, boats, cars etc - we keep a bucket of water and a brush in the front garden so we can clean the last splatter off before it damages the paintwork. It's the brown ones that do the damage!
It is not just tourists that feed them either, our neighbour feeds one though she insists that it is the same one that comes back FFS!
Don't get me started on seagulls...

It was a lovely day though. Watched lots of sailing boats and poked about in rock pools and, as ever, marvelled at the fact that so few boats stop at Lyme Regis. I guess it's a combination of the fact that the moorings/anchorages are always a bit rolly with the swell and there's only room for a small number of boats on the pontoons that are sheltered by the Cobb and the inner harbour dries and is full of local boats, mostly peche promenades and older but essentially similar types and some other dayboats. Also, the short way is straight across Lyme Bay.

Lyme Regis is the most popular town in Dorset and rightly so.
West Bay is a nice little harbour though the entrance is shallow at low tide. Brixham also nice.
What Lyme Bay needs is a good marina to pull boaters in otherwise most go straight across from Start Point to Portland.

I have been on the plastic pontoon on two occasions and both times the motion was so bad that we left once to pick up a mooring and the other to anchor. Both times there was very little in the sea state. It does not surprise me many do not stop there but it is a lovely place.

Report in the paper today …. chap had a seagull nick one of his chips so he grabbed it by the legs and banged its head against a wall … knocked it daft so someone took it to the vet who put it down. Someone else had it filmed on their mobile so now he's got the police and the RSPCA after him. In Weston-s-m.

I realise this is a boat forum but, please don’t do that to your car’s paint.

Tesco value sponge, dump it in the water to get it nice and wet, spray a bit of car wash solution on one side of the sponge and lay it down on that side on top of the poop. Then go have a cuppa. 10-15 mins later it will wipe off with zero effort.

I realise this is a boat forum but, please don’t do that to your car’s paint.

Also car-based: never having used the brand before, I bought a tin of Meguiars (sp?) 'mirror-bright' wax the other day as I had run out of AutoGlym and after reasonably intensive detailing (rinse/wash/rinse/dry/claybar/polish/wax) I was pleased with the result. I was also glad that it was quite a small car! Had to be done, as I had a choice of BRDC and Porsche Owners Club car-parking at the Silverstone Classic on Friday and I didn't want to let the side down. :encouragement:

Meguiars make some really good products, indeed, I’ve been using Megiuars quick detailer with the above method daily as my work’s car park currently resembles an Alfred Hitchcock movie with all the nesting gulls.
