Theft at Brighton Marina

Hi Jimmy

i'm not surprised things have gone missing - i was on pontoon 8 visiting over the weekend and spent most of the weekend cleaning and polishing my boat - black boat first berth on the left the clean one! the main entrance gates were wide open for 2 days and there was loads of people walking in and out of the marina lots asking me questions, kids on skateboards and bikes it was like a free for all and i was really surprised how many people climb round the post onto the pontoon and how easy that actually was. I felt awkward as i was a visitor so i didnt feel i could challenge these people as i didnt know if they were berthed there but i did say to my wife that i wasnt impressed with the security in the marina.

Everyone was very nice but i did see a guy carrying a cable he was in a brown jacket middle aged well built with a bit of a stubbly beard if that helps but i dont remember when i saw him. There was also a mains cable in the bin which i saw when i dumped my rubbish.

Ha! I think I actually said hello to you at lunchtime on Friday when I came down to the boat. Big Doral?

The main gates being open at the weekend is actually marina policy, that's why there are individual gates on the pontoons. It's because the marina office is at the far end of the western jetty, ie within the gated area.

Climbing round the gates on the pontoon is a bit off though and we generally challenge that when we see it.

I'm interested in your comments about someone walking off with a cable though, I'll have that in mind when I get back down to the marina this afternoon - thanks for that.

And next time you're on my pontoon for a visit - come and say hello! :D

Cheers
Jimmy

Brighton

Ah the Doral on number 8. I was walking past and saw a lot of energetic activity on board this beatiful black boat. In the afternoon, going back I saw the same boat with crew in a relaxed state. Boat now gleaming like new. Job well done I would say.

Thank you kind sir,

yes I was quite pleased, 2 yrs old have polished her weekly since I have had her, I do spend a lot of time and think it pays off..

I think without giving too much away watch this space or at least the mag.

not sure I want to promote this thread to the top as its not a good subject, was not nice to read someone say they wont go to Brighton. we have used a whole book of season tickets there this year and there is 6 I think, in a book.

You would think these modern marinas like MDL have good security and access controls.
...
So not convinced marinas like MDL etc are secure, your better off getting to know people around your berth and look out for each other.

I know you didn't specifically state Brighton is MDL, but as it is a Premier marina, just thought I'd mention that before MDL jump in as an aggrieved party!

I've got one of those same devices that texts me also, its pretty good. I connected a float switch to it to monitor the bilge, and a motion detector right by the rear deck, but you can connect anything to it - battery relay, etc. If someone nicks you whole boat, or it breaks loose from the mooring (mine is on a mooring) then the geo fence activates and it sends you a text telling you the position on google maps.

It cost me about US$280 off the internet at http://www.smart-azz.com it is permanently wired to my boat now on the 24v system.

Still doesn't help fix the lite fingered *()&^% roaming the docks though.

Hi, I'm also berthed in Brighton on pontoon 15. Went down to the boat Saturday slippped the lines and noticed one of the two big ball fenders was missing. I thought it had worked loose and drifted away but not so sure now i'm reading this. Would anyone really nick just one fender?? :(:confused:I did have a chart plotter taken from my previous boat back in 2007 but was on another pontoon that was quite visable from the broadwalk.

From what I've learned over the past week or so since my shorepower cable was nicked, it does seem that there does seem to be a bit of petty theft going on, although I suspect that most of it doesn't get reported to the marina. A chap on my pontoon had one of his dock fenders (just one, oddly) unbolted and taken not long ago.

Cheers

Hi all, a new Brighton Marina berthholder here!

I’ve read this thread and discussed the security issues at Brighton Marina with numerous people. The general consensus seems to be that this marina is a little bit dodgy at times. I hope that’s not the case, but that seems to be the impression of many.

I’ve fired an email off to James Davidson, who is the Police Sergeant responsible for PCs and PCSOs who cover this area. I have suggested they make contact with the marina office and get a entry dongle and start patrolling the jetty.

THAT's what I call policing in the community !

I'm sure the forum can reciprocate if you need any ideas for the boat. Hope it works out well !

Another cop. I expect you lot - Slow boat, Special branch and others - will be having your own forum meets soon.

Then you can arrest each other for taking pictures of the meeting. :D

Rape alarms. Great things

Jimmy the builder. When my boat is moored at the marina... I will clip two rape alarms to the boat and the underside of the pontoon. Why not fix one rape alarm to any wiring that you would like to keep. I know this sounds a bit silly ...but it works. When I work the morning shift, I attach two rape alarms to my works bag...so if somebody decides to carjack me, my bag is thrown and the noise will burst eardrums. The only problem with rape alarms is the whole of the marina will be awake when these babies go off. You may take the mick but these work honest. But be careful these are very loud so do not use in the house to show friends...I did and could not hear for sometime lol:p

Yeah, I think this may be a different James Davidson lol.

I've got an email back and apparently they already have an entry dongle and do come down from time to time. They have, or had, until very recently, a "police" box attached to the security office, where they worked from quite a lot.

Yeah, right. I've had boats in Brighton marina since 1999, and I have never, ever seen a copper walking around on the pontoons. They don't have a police box attached to the security office, although the security office do have access to the pnc - maybe that's the link that your contact was referring to. In fairness the problems with security at Brighton marina aren't really the fault of the police - they are the fault of the marina, and the outsourced security contractors, who are rubbish.

Cheers
Jimmy
