How cr ap is this? Some lowlife has nicked my shorepower cable while my boat was on berth at Brighton marina. It was a custom made cable, specifically made for the berth, clipped to the boat and everything.

Very blo ody annoying. Grrrr.

Cheers

The ironic fact is with the security gates there I would have thought it's most likely to have been another boat owner.

If it's a bit 'different' so to speak, it may be possible to identify it if it's in use in the marina. Although the difficult bit would be proving you were the rightful owner. S'pose you could always nick it back, if that was the case?

sorry to hear that, but Brighton has a BIT of a reputation for things to walk. Years ago I lost my anchor and chain whilst my friend had his props nicked by some low life I have never been sure about the mix of boaters/livrabords/and social housing, plus now students basicly living in overgrown dinghys,

Last week I could not lock the outboard on the stern so brought it home......right move by the sound of it.

Yeah, the helpful comment from the marina office was 'ooh, we haven't had a cable theft for three or four years...'. Really?

In fact the connector (the only valuable bit of the cable) is fairly easily identifiable, so if I should ever see it again (unlikely, I know) I'll have no hesitation in taking it back.

Sorry to hear that

If it were me i'd have a walk around the marina to see if i could see it...

Sorry to hear that. I am in Brighton now writing this. A guy at the end of our pontoon had his shore power lead taken about three years ago. I was talking to a pal yesterday whose mate in Brighton had his VHF nicked last week.

Its not only Brighton though. I hadmy ensign nicked in France and when I went to get a new one the sales assistant said" oh ensigns, its usally shore power leads that they take".

Any way how cn you get broad band in Brighton??

At my last marina, we left a hozelock fitting and trigger on the hose next to our boat, some toe rag nicked it. So we then just left a fitting on the hose, that went too. It wasn't the loss of the £2 fitting that was annoying, as much as the feeling that you couldn't leave anything lying around.

Some toe rag boarded my boat in Ocean Village during January and nicked the big ball fender off my boat....so much for the marina security. Don't they have camera's that can detect this sort of thing?

Sorry to hear that Jimmy, thieving barstewards. you're not having yer Marinco plug back though!

:D I think that's what the miserable ferkers took it for, although the one you've got is a 16A connector, and what I now need is the bigger one, the 32A connector. £130 new! It might make more sense to take the Marinco socket off the boat and replace it with a normal 16A blue inlet...

Cheers

Why not leave one hanging over the back of your boat but wired up wrong. When someone steals it and tries to use it he blows his boat system!

It not like this inceident is a bit of light fingers is it, when they have to go to some effort to nick it.
Well, looks like you ll have to get that generator ;)

what pontoon was this taken from??

Pontoon 8, and yes, the gate for the pontoon is working at the moment. The marina manager is involved now and he's being very helpful. By looking at the daily electricity meter readings it looks like it was taken sometime between Thursday morning and Friday lunchtime - so they are looking at the CCTV now to see if anything helpful can be seen over that time period.

Sorry to hear that Jimmy. What complete scumbags. Those Marinco plugs are shockingly expensive so I guess that's the motivation for stealing.

It might be worth fitting a www.yacht-sentinel.com. I have one and it works quite well. Among other things, it texts you if the shorepower fails, so if this were to happen again it would alert you and also give you an exact time so the CCTV is easier to search.

Still a total PITA though

Hi Jimmy

i'm not surprised things have gone missing - i was on pontoon 8 visiting over the weekend and spent most of the weekend cleaning and polishing my boat - black boat first berth on the left the clean one! the main entrance gates were wide open for 2 days and there was loads of people walking in and out of the marina lots asking me questions, kids on skateboards and bikes it was like a free for all and i was really surprised how many people climb round the post onto the pontoon and how easy that actually was. I felt awkward as i was a visitor so i didnt feel i could challenge these people as i didnt know if they were berthed there but i did say to my wife that i wasnt impressed with the security in the marina.

Everyone was very nice but i did see a guy carrying a cable he was in a brown jacket middle aged well built with a bit of a stubbly beard if that helps but i dont remember when i saw him. There was also a mains cable in the bin which i saw when i dumped my rubbish.

Reading the responses I think I will avoid visiting Brighton marina for sure.

It is a real shame that you have to lock everything down and become paranoid. You would think these modern marinas like MDL have good security and access controls.

You only have to watch those automatic gates at any marina and you can bypass them by just waiting, no one will question you and many feel it is not their place to do so.

If you ever visit the marina late at night in the week, you normally only have one person on duty and I would have thought impossible to monitor the entire marina. It also depends on the person who is on duty, a few times I encounter the guy actually in the pub with the mobile number on the marina reception door (that was a few years ago) and other times more recently I was questioned late one evening while looking at my hull with a torch (just come out of the water) - but I said it was my boat and he walked away.

So not convinced marinas like MDL etc are secure, your better off getting to know people around your berth and look out for each other.

Hi jfm

Well you can imagine how peeved I'm feeling, I've actually got a device that texts me when the shorepower fails, I got it for the P42 because our neighbour when we had that boat was forever tripping the power out on the pontoon. But since we've had the T40 and have been back on pontoon 8 the shorepower has been completely reliable and so I haven't needed to install it. (It never occurred to me that someone would nick the cable...).

Cheers
Jimmy
