The World\'s Greatest Boat Designer?

Just caught up with yesterday's Times. Apparently Philippe Starck is not only good at fruit juice squeezers and toilets:

" 'And we are making a new 1,230 metre boat. I've invented a new hull which makes zero waves at 25 knots.' This last was the work of an afternoon."

Not bad, eh? Wonder what he could if he devoted a whole day to it?

There's been lots of discussion on the difference between a boat and a ship. But surely this must just about blur the edges to the limit?

Re: The World\'s Greatest Boat Designer?

Noah? Who else could make a wooden boat about 120 foot long and get all of the world's animals into it.

Come to think of it, cut the boat down to about 35 foot, make it out of fibreglass and that describes most racing boats.

Re: The World\'s Greatest Boat Designer?

It'll be interesting to see a boat getting on for the size of a supertanker planing...

Do you think he got his lengths mixed up?

...except he's apparently absolutely rubbish at it. I've never been wealthy or pretentious enough to buy one of his lemon squeezers but, apparently, they are completely useless at squeezing lemons. A classic example of the kind of "designer" tat that was sold to yuppies at extortionate prices in the '80s. By this token, I suspect the hull looks sensational but has some minor design flaw - probably something along the lines of not having any positive buoyancy.

All form, no function - a bit like me, according to Mrs jhr.....

Re: The World\'s Greatest Boat Designer?

the french use a comma to separate units and decimals and points to separate thousands. 1,230 metres is therefore a fraction over 4 ft.

Re: The World\'s Greatest Boat Designer?

I think it would be interesting to see even a 4ft superyacht doing 25 knots /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
