The world’s largest container vessel will be inaugurated tomorrow in Marseilles. The “Jules Verne” is 1300’x 177’ and can transport 16000 containers stacked 11 high inside the vessel and 9 high on deck. On a typical voyage from the Far East it uses 9000 tonnes of diesel and travels at 26 knots. It takes 3nm to stop.

An even larger vessel will be launched in July holding 18000 containers.

It came through the Suez canal in a sandstorm where they couldn’t see the bow. They only had 30m leeway on each side of the boat in order to stay within the channel.

Smart money suggests many will go into lay up for a time. There is already considerable over capacity in the container market and these monsters are only going to make things worse - Maersk have committed to buying 30!
The heady days of box boats hammering along at 35 knots and burning 400 plus tonnes of fuel a day are long gone alas!

I think they will lay up/sell the smaller tonnage they own, not sure if they finally committed to all the options on the EEE class, I thought they were taking 20, and had cancelled the option for 10 more. I see they are doubling the shipping rates on TEU's.

Puts The Columbia and California Stars that I sailed on in the late'70s, early '80s into perspective. They carried around 1000 20ft containers, with probably more crew than the 16000 jobs of today.

Quite amazing!

Far more crew and a much more civilised life onboard and ashore! The Snake Pit, the British or Chicks anyone?
