The world’s largest container vessel will be inaugurated tomorrow in Marseilles. The “Jules Verne” is 1300’x 177’ and can transport 16000 containers stacked 11 high inside the vessel and 9 high on deck. On a typical voyage from the Far East it uses 9000 tonnes of diesel and travels at 26 knots. It takes 3nm to stop.
An even larger vessel will be launched in July holding 18000 containers.
It came through the Suez canal in a sandstorm where they couldn’t see the bow. They only had 30m leeway on each side of the boat in order to stay within the channel.
