I have a Garmin 4008 plotter, stand alone connected to nothing but 12v and GPS antenna. My old auto helm wind display is knackered as there are no cups at the mast head and the direction isn't trustworthy. My depth works okay but the log is intermittent at best.( combined display). Seeing as the auto helm kit is original equipment and now nearly 20 years old, do I replace with new, or do I buy something specifically to connect to my plotter, or even wireless kit maybe?

Thanks. Alan

I had a similar dilemma and bought Tacktick: wind instrument and speed/depth with combined transducer. I didn't buy the box that outputs NMEA for the plotter, but I knew I could add it afterwards if I decided I needed it. Used the setup last season and happy with it, and no urge to buy the NMEA box yet.
