The value of the marina shower

Now that's an interesting comment. We prefer to shower on board (and now have the luxury of His and Hers but that's just showing off) for the very same reason.

How do you assess if the showers are hygienic with low risk of AF infection.........just observation and the yuk factor?
Pure guesswork, except at the Falmouth Town Quay, which is the only place I know I got AF. It has since been refurbished, but the risk is now of a mental breakdown from the godawful music they play there.

I think all marina managers should be forced to use their showers on a regular basis, so they can see what we have to put up with. So many showers have no sensible tray/shelf for soap or showergel. So many have inadequate hooks for clothes and towels. So many are so impossibly cramped that dressing is an acrobatic feat. And how many have hair dryers?

On a brighter note, Shotley Marina has baths (but the showers aren't great!).

What is most infuriating is when the whole shower block gets rebuilt at some expense but they still don't design it so that you have enough hooks and your clothes don't get sprayed by the shower. Cowes Yacht Haven is a good example.

Port Solent has piped Classic FM and the showers are well apart from your clothes, but they are "en suite" with the toilet, so one person in the shower is also occupying a toilet and one using the toilet is hogging a shower.

Combined toilet and showers have become popular in English marinas in the last few years. If they are not too busy, they can be OK.

Other things being equal, I prefer loos and showers in separate rooms. My chief bugbear is usually the lack of a dry area to dress in, since I am a cold mortal and seldom wear shorts. The technological advance made by British engineers, called a shower curtain, has not yet reached the Continent, though even this can be defeated by thoughtless users, otherwise known as the French.

I've long-since realised that it's pointless trying to get dry and dress properly in the average shower block. I go to the showers with the minimum acceptable clothing and wettable slip-on shoes, and get properly dressed back on the boat.

What a great description of the new showers in Cherbourg!

I don't take my crocs off, no worries. Some facilities can be pretty grim, even had to use the public loo in places but as long as the water's clean and preferably warm I'm ok.
