What is a Macwester 27 really like to sail. I have heard that they are terrible to windward is this true???
How do they compare to say a Sadler 25? or similar.

I would be grateful for your views - Thanks

Mackwester 27

I had a Mackwester 27 for eight years and sailed it East Coast, France, and Holland. The boat always felt safe and solidly built. They have a reputation for heavy weather-helm which is partly due to their above-water resemblance to the less successful Mack. 26 - which does suffer from weather helm. They are not particularly fast; probably slower than the Sadler 25 you mention, but for family cruising this is more than made up for by the safe feel, and comfortable lay out. For the East Coast, or anywhere that it might have to take the ground regularly, the fully supported rudder to my mind puts it a head of the Centaur with which it is often compared. It is also, to my mind, a better looking boat than many of the boats of a similar age and price.
