The trio of new 42 footers at Southampton & other stuff

The problem with those boats though is they they aren't the super tough industrial finish, just not quite a glitzy as the usual brands and made to a budget.

I'm talking lifeboat tough.

I'm fully aware it would ne a niche market and I don't even know if I'd actually buy one myself!

Henry :)

Fingers crossed it holds together with them jumping all over it ;)

It's actually a very interesting point you make. All boats are built very much to 5 star luxury designs. I wonder how a really tough, super practical boat would be received by the market.

We looked at a place out in Thailand a few years ago and still harbour desires to have a place out there at some stage. That boat would lead a much different life to the one over here. Diving gear thrown around, wet clothes inside, sand everywhere and so on. You'd want to just hose the whole thing down at the end of the day.

That's probably what appealed about the swift 52 trawler. That feeling of ruggedness and not having to be too precious with it.

As I think I said somewhere earlier we would all have our ideal designs but they would be very unique and others would most likely hate them!!

I also wonder how much of a boat's cost is made up of the "luxury" element and how much cheaper if any would it be with super tough finishes everywhere. I suspect that ironically it wouldn't actually be that much cheaper as the industrial materials would be just as expensive.

I do love this time after the shows when your boating juices are flowing having had them whetted wandering around.

On a totally different note my first post on an iPad ! Can you tell the difference? It would make a cracking platform for boating charts. If you have one get the free Harbour master application. It let's you control a busy port trying to avoid collisions. I fear the loss adjusters may have to clear a window to tot up the damage following my early efforts.

Keep smiling

Henry :)

If anyone remembers, one of the original selling points for the Range Rover was that you could open the doors and hose down the interior after a hard day on the farm or the shoot.

I thought your first post on the ipad was, if you'll forgive me, just a tiny bit more smug than your normal style. :D

Mike, I think you've hit the nail on the head there. I've often wondered why the market does seem as polarised as it is and I suspect you're right, it's people buying into that lifestyle thing. I guess the good news is that the glitzy boats are often very functional as well, even if you do have to be a bit more precious about them.

I was moored next to a Meridian 390 in France a few weeks back. Quite glitzy (nice underwater lighting) but it looked just that little bit more finished for every day use than the average. Don't seem to see them over here much. Interesting. Is it a peculiarly British/Italian thing?

I just got an I-Pad, felt a bit flush so bought the lad an I-Pod, and for the wife... an I-Ron. For some reason she wasn't impressed.:D

On a serious note, it would be interesting to see how the business pitches it sales for a 42 footer for example... do they work to a perceived budget of the buyer, or what is a reasonable mark up, or...what they think they can get away with given the looks of the boat??? Any thoughts?

Too busy to go this year, and miss the trip to be honest (especially the bit where I can sneak on all the boats before the press turns up). Any boat stand out as a genuinely good all round package???
