Well sad but true ... it is most likely that in next few weeks my UK boat will be lifted onto a trailer and then trucked out to Baltic ... to spend her last years in non-tidal waters .... tied up at bottom of our garden ....

The worrying thing though is to sort an A-Frame and gear to allow us to raise / lower mast easily to get under twon bridges ...... Otherwise it's confined to 40kms of navigable wide river ....

Originally it was all set to sail her over early next summer ... but matters have come about that mean I should move her asap ..... Ex's and Divorce seem to play a part !!

When it all happens .... I'll try and get some photies etc. together and any info that others my be interested in ... and post later on when it happens ...

Therefore ol'Nige will be available to crew / cavort and generally play around on others boats when over in UK .... I'll even splice the odd rope and glass of wine / beer / spirit of course ........

Forgot to add ....

Some post questions about suitability of older diesel engines to new ULSD .... road diesel.

Well out here in Latvia - there is no cheap fuel for us boaters ... and most is bought via the same pump for filling the car .... Yep - it's carrying cans unless you are lucky to be in a marina - not so many this side / part of Baltic.

My aged trusty old Perkins 4-107 will once the Red Diesel is exhausted from tank be run on straight road ULSD .... In fact she will have a "birthday" in that I shall most likely obtain the services of an ex soviet mechanic to run his hands over the Perk and give it some TLC ... namely change the oil + filter ( at least 3 yr old already ), maybe reset the injectors and generally clean her up a bit ....

By the time the list of jobs that I have - AND SWMBO has are done - the boat would have fallen apart in shock !!

You could always leave your venerable old Perkins in the care of your tame 'michman', and enjoy Baltic sailing at its best.......

And don't imagine there are no creature comforts there.... Hidden away deep in the large yellow drybag are 4 bottles of quite drinkable French wine, and about a dozen assorted miniatures of single malt - for close encounters with the natives, you understand!

That's how I found out about 'suurstromming' (sic), 'bastu' with local college girls, and grandmother's bathtub vodka!!

It is a great place to sail ...... winds tend to be reasonably steady and predominate from SE .... (pilot charts etc. say otherwise - but I live here !!). No tides or so small as to be negligible ....
Plenty of little beaches / coves places to beach on ... (not too hard of course .... that 20cm tide could play havoc ...). People are good ... and there would be no end of volunteers to crew !!

I live on the Latvian West Coast and we have no islands etc. - but a short hop across to Sweden and bingo - thousands of them .... Trip up and over north of Kolka peninsular into Riga bay ...... a cruising dream ... limited facilities - but unspoilt basically and still cheap !! We then carry further on to Estonian Islands ... Saaremaa etc. - holiday islands ... with good facilities ....
We could carry on around the craggy shoreline and coves of Estonia reaching a sailing heaven - Tallinn ..... with the Olympic marina - where I previously had my 1/4 ton race boat ..... FRom here a short hop to Finland .... and more islands.

Yep - life's going to be a real b****h .......

So at present - I'm sorting the "car-park" at front of my house .... moving all the Additive containers, cars, truck etc. to make way for Superanne - to have pride of place and access to electric etc.

She will have "frost-protector laid under engine for winter ... a tent canopy rigged so that she can be worked on ..... generally by spring the idea being that she will once again be spick and span ... clean and bright .... ready to impress the natives. (A few river rentals ..... afternoon trips won't go amiss !! Locals love being on the water .. and can be quite lucrative for those lucky enough to have a boat !!)

In summer when sun only sets for an hour or so .... late evenings on the river are heaven ... when approaching late - sun is usually setting over the house and river normally calm .... it is "serene" .......

I can picture Superanne in mind ghosting along the river ...... quietly enjoying a glass and basically not a care ....

Superanne ..... you have the name reason CORRECT !

Previous owner rec'd Superannuation Payment and that's how she got the present name ..... like most I asked if wifes name was Anne ..... got a frosty reply !

As he said - He wanted to name it after the payment .... but not that it was TOO obvious ....

I hated the name at first and then it sort of mellowed with me .... always reluctant to change it - Bad luck and all that ...

Well ... it's stuck with it now - as I have to maintain SSR and don't want to go through Latvian Officialdom if I change it ..... They have strict boating laws here .....

Not because I live out here ... but because it really is.

I was honoured to become CA Honary Local Rep for my area earlier this year ... so I am looking fwd to even more boating things than usual. I can fully understand why CA has a special section dedicated to the Baltic ...

I was surprised to find out how many "Winter" their boats in Sweden and cruise Baltic in summer ... actually their boats rarely seeing UK ...

So for me - it's design and build a "bimimi arch" for back end, an A-Frame affair to raise and lower mast, re-build my pontoon that has finally given up having been in for 2 winters !! .... set up a mooring buoy and tackle at entrance to canal. (Plus of course track plot the river for creating own chart for plotter ..... and depth contour it .....)

So just setting date now for actual lift ...

It's all agreed now ... except for actual date to place on trailer .... which will be ~ 23 - 24 Nov.

So she should arrive in Latvia at my house before real winter starts and allow a limited bit of work before snugging her down for the cold ...

As peeps can probably imagine - I'm all itchy and difficult to concentrate on work .... images of boat over here etc. - the possible summer next year etc. cruising the river ...
