...is proving somewhat louder than I have previously experienced on sailing yachts. We were lying to a swinging mooring on the Dart in a spring tide at the weekend. In the night, the sound of the water rushing down the hull woke everyone on board. As I lay awake cursing another another factor which makes SWIMBO prefer weekends at home, I wondered if this was exceptional or whether the shape of a planing hull means it's inevitable.

Sort of unavoidable but there are mitigations available - if you have an inflatable tender/rib put this in between the boat and the mooring buoy - bow to the buoy. This should flatten off any wavelets but you aren't going to get rid of the actual 'rushing' sound!
If you don't have a tender then get lengths of pipe insulation from your DIY store (number according to boat size), larger diameter better, thread onto a line and take round the bow from the mid cleats - again should deaden the wavelets.
Finally, and conditions boat etc will dictate the safety of this approach, consider mooring by the stern on a bridle.
