do you think this is actually a diesel outboard... or just the Chinese being tricky and actually it is just a 2 stroke petrol....?

If it is diesel I would love to have a look and a go of one of these, 2 stroke diesel... I very much doubt it will pass EU emissions to ever retail in the UK, but 4hp, 20kg.... its not bad is it! But perhaps it is just a myth.

says gasoline...?

Buy 10 at $390 each... ?

Do you want the bad news, or the bad news.

Just phoned for prices:

Rebuilt and Reconditioned units:

27 hp / 100kg.....£11,500.....
36hp/ 115kg......£18,000....,, no that's not a misprint!!!

He told me just the parts to recondition the 27 hp cost over £5k......

Def not a diesel.

As most small outboards, regardless of label, are made by Tohatsu this by best guess is a Chinese version of the same.

Google for T4BMS images and see many.

Coincidal?

Wonder if it has been 'developed' by traditional Asian adaptive methods...?

It may not be diesel, but a multi fuel engine certainly sounds interesting.. mind you I'm not sure that Jet A1 fuel is cheaper than unleaded!

Fantastic idea. Paraffin is untaxed, has no dye in it and is only slightly more expensive than red diesel.
If pulled over by customs you can just switch over to petrol...no worries.
Who would ever suspect that you can use tax free fuel in an outboard!
I want one!

Looks like the Evinrude 55hp multi-fuel can run on Diesel:

2008 Evinrude 55MFE In new condition, Model E55MRLSCC, Special E-Tec, 2 cyl. Outboard Engine. 55 HP(41KW) - 5500-6000RPM , First Multi-Fuel engine capable of running on heavy fuels such as JP4, 5, 8, JetA, JetB, Keresene, gasoline based fuels: Gasoline, Gasohol, 87AKI (R+M)/2 or 90RON minimum. Emergency Fuel: Diesel DFM-F76, BioDiesel.
Important: If outboard must be run on diesel, it should then be run on gasoline to clean internal components. Originally designed for use by Military Special Forces. Currently available for civilian use.

That's brilliant, like and old 2.5ltr (petrol) land rover I had, used to run on anything!

We had a grey Fergie 20 that ran on tvo....i think it was similar to petrol/ diesel mix...a bit like paraffin.started on petrol.

I've emailed for some prices.....weird there's no advertised price list or spec. sheet!
If the price is realistic, I might volunteer to be the Guinea pig.:o

daft Q,

isn't compression ratios on diesel very much different to petrol/gasoline however you want to call it???
how could it possibly work?

cheers

With the old TVO tractors you had to heat the engine up on petrol before switching over to the 'paraffin'.
Just guessing that if the outboard is hot, the diesel will be compressed enough to ignite.

The new lean burn engine run at with a very lean mixture and higher compression than standard, but not at 16:1 like most diesels.

It does say 'emergency' ( maybe those are the repair bills!)

Back in the 1960's Yamaha made a petrol/paraffin outboard which was popular on the inland waterways for a time, but turned out to be rather unreliable as did not like dropping down to idle speed after hard continuous running. Would stall just when you needed it like going into a lock and then not wanting to start again (recoil starter) in a hurry. Horrible smell as well from what I remember.

Don't like saying nasty things about products, but,.....there seems to be lots of bad reports on Ivinrude 2str. O/B's.
