got me to thinking. Who on earth are we sailing with? A neat orderly habit, and a willingness to buy me drink, makes a good shipmate as far as I'm concerned. Visiting the various, and greatly improved "facilities" in most harbours and marinas does make you wonder about some crewmembers though.

It's not unusual to find sinks full of dirty water, toilets unflushed, razorblades in the shower stall or bog paper all over the floor.

Who are the people doing this? What must their homes be like?

The same question regularly occurs to me.

I can only assume that some of these people are far too wealthy, or important, or even both, to clean up after themselves and are probably lost without their scivvies, although the quantity of bog paper strewn around the floors does suggest a rudimentary skill in arse wiping.

I would blow a fuse if I found my company's workshop bogs in the condition that I often find marina facilities.

Try the spoilt brats belonging to some boat owners. It is the "my daddy owns a boat - I'm special" syndrome like the case if the child blasting away on th signal horn while daddy's boat was tied up - several other boat owners near by asked the child to stop at which point daddy come up on deck and says "the kid is only playing and can do what he wants" - A quick call to the marina office and down comes the manager and warns daddy if the brat caused any more disturbance then daddy could remove his boat from the marina immediately. daddy was a visiting MoBo'er whose planned stay was cut short!

I could go on about the thoughtless behaviour (witnessed) of some of the "boat children" not to mention their "ya who Henry and Henrietta" parents but that would only start another heated argument - sorry discussion.

Was in one establishment last year, which shall remain nameless for obvious reasons, when there was a commotion at the office and next thing the plodmobile arrives and out get a couple of our finest "boys in blue". being a nosey bu@@er I had another beer and watched / eavesdropped until mummy, daddy and brats were taken inside the office. Next thing mummy daddy and brats are seen going into the toilets/showers (toilets closed - big sign TOILETS CLOSED FOR CLEANING PLEASE USE TOILETS UPSTAIRS Etc Etc.) to emerge about 15 minutes later with bin bags full of what looked like bog roll. In goes Plod and manager, few minutes out they come - family gets a lecture from Plod.

Nosey wanders into office where manager is still a bit upset, quietly enquire about the presence of Plod. The little brats were caught on CCTV plugging the sinks (and overflows with bog roll) and turning on the taps full, pulling the bog roll out of the holder (commercial rolls, like about 15" dia type and throwing it all over the now wet floor and shoving handfuls down the crapper. Mummy and Daddy said " not our children, they would not do such a thing and refused to do anything even when they were caught on cctv. Enter Plod, change of heart and family had to clean up the mess or brats charged with vandalism or such like.

CCTV in the toilets?? What is the world coming to? Maybe the rest of the marinas should consider the same and prosecute the offenders.

If they could be seen pulling the bog roll off the holder I think I'd like to know which marina, my right to defecate in private is non negotiable!

One of the worst tasks I had as a line manager was to invoke the disciplinary procedure on a guy who was deliberately making a mess of the gents toilets. Paper and p!$$ all over the floor, hand towels thrown around the sink area, etc everything except solid waste, thankfully. Without going into details, it took several weeks to set up a 'sting' to prove it was one individual. When I confronted him, he denied all knowledge and asked how he could clear his name - then resigned the next morning.

I suggested he consult a doctor because he clearly had a 'problem' of some sort - never heard from again. (This always sounds like "The Worst Job I Ever Had" - remember Derek and Clive Live aka P.Cooke and D.Moore????)

So far as marina showers are concerned, I think it is a combination of people who make a mess on purpose such as in Cliff's kids example, others who just don't give a dam, and thirdly some who are simply careless and don't realise what they have done.

If I had kids and they disturbed someone, even though I was not personally being disturbed and that someone complained to me. I genuinely think I would be to embarrassed not to stop the kids doing what they were doing. This society were kids appear in charge is so screwed up it is frightening.

When I was a kid and an adult told me off, it was quickly followed by my dad telling me off too. Is it an education thing, why do all parents think their brats are perfect and it could never have been them. Can they not remember being young.

I was a brat, but I never damaged property in my search for entertainment, why do things seem different now, or am I just rapidly heading towards becoming an old fart!

Couldn't agree more.

My kids are perfect actually, but only because I beat them regularly.

<hr width=100% size=1>my opinion is complete rubbish, probably.

No... I in my personal opinion it's the last fifteen or so years of increasing violent computer games etc... even perhaps those little tinkers the Teenage Mutant Heroes... all instill a feeling of power over authority into the kids.. I heard of a group of eight year olds the other day that where playing some innocent looking game involving blindfolds etc.. when asked what game it was (assuming something innocent) kids replied that they were playing at HOSTAGES!

Can I leave the planet please. This one is broken.

What the hell... it's only money!

Our youngest (10yo) came home from school with the classes latest literary effort, a newspaper called the "Beastly Times".

One Headline was "Queen Explodes, Long live Blair" and in a description of the event, the reporter said it was quite interesting cos everybody could see what the queen had had for dinner.

Cowes Yacht Haven, Shepherds Wharf are pretty dismal. Nobody cleans the facilities at Shepherds over the weekend either and the cleaners leave the new loo rolls on the floor (YEUCH) so packets of tissues are usually a neccessity.

We should not put up with it. Most of us do not complain often enough, I certainly don't!

A few years back we were staying at a certain sports centred holiday village and, whilst waiting to be served at the bar, I over heard a lady complain about the beer slops on the counter tops. "Oh we're so busy we haven't time to clean up" said a very young bar attendant (getting the hang of this pc bit, must make a note to shoot myself). The lady pointed out that she quiet understood, but would probably call back on Monday in her professional capacity as an Environmental Health Officer and slap an Improvement Notice on the place. The bar and tables soon got cleared and wiped over!

Hope you don't mind if I join in - I want to maintain my newly acquired 'Regular' status and as I know relatively little about boats this seems to be an opportunity. A couple of years ago my then 9 year old daughter was threatened at school into 'lending' another girl a small amount of money. This came out somehow (daughter swears she's no snitch) and the headmaster punished them both equally, the blackmailer for the obvious, my daughter for giving her the money, because he needed to be seen to be fair! Not sure exactly what the message is to draw from this, but it so confused my view of the universe that I cannot be surprised at anything that kids who have enjoyed that kind of 'education' might do.

Ever seen that TV programme where those 2 old girls clean up peoples houses, talk about scenes of unbelievable filth and squallor from apparently normal people - perhaps they have since taken up sailing!
