Having just finished a weeks shift work, I thought I would nip down to The Shipwreck at Shotley with a friend who has a boat at Shotley marina. We'd been there before a while ago for an evening meal so thought we'd go again.

We ordered & paid for drinks at the bar along with food and took our table number outside to enjoy the evening sun. Food followed in a fairly timely manner. Mate had a chilli and I had a chicken burger with an extra side of chips. At £11 odd quid for anything like this, you'd expect an absolutely perfect dish. This was mine.....

Look at the week old salad! Dark green and slimey. So we politely asked for the manager to look at the dish. I was told that when you put salad on hot meat, it can wilt slightly. Ok, but surely not rot?

I have worked in both industrial food processing and managed a local farm shop and to be told that the salad was not past its best was an insult. The chef, Janey, would not appear despite me asking to see her in person.

We were offered a low value dessert or a partial refund on the dish..... partial! The manager who was called Alex, suggested that because I'd eaten just under half by burger and all the chips, he'd only be able to refund £6.50.

In the few years I've dabbled in food, I've never heard of a partial refund on an insufficient dish. Partial refund on the total bill - yes, but on an individual dish - no.

To say Alex's attitude was disgraceful was an understatement. We were told that we could complain to who we liked in the management office, but they'd "back him up". He was a total arrogant and disbelieving person. He insinuated that I was just full up and didn't want the rest of my food.

He suggested that he'd purchased the salad himself in person from Booker that day - fresh. Errrr - no. I asked to see the packaging and he declined.

We took the partial refund under duress and left immediately. However are now in talks with the 2 directors of Shotley Marina.

Shotley may have a premier marina but the food at the establishment on site is far from premier.

I've now learned the local joke is to call it "The shi*wreck" Needless to say that whilst the arrogant manager is still running the place, we won't be back.

You should have called into FMYC :encouragement:

I wish I could say I'm surprised, but I'm not. They serve a decent enough pint, but any restaurant that has a "jokey" sign behind the bar saying "Many people have eaten from our kitchen and gone on to lead normal, healthy lives" isn't taking itself, or its customers, very seriously.

It's always been a marmite place some people love it others don't. When I was at Shotley twice was enough, the food was poor and that is being kind and you came out of the place smelling of chips and cooking. Not good.

Looking at the trip adviser comments it seems to bear out that it's a marmite place people love it or loath it, I suppose it's what you are used too and expect. The staff always seem to get a pasting though.

Is the Bristol Arms any good these days? Both Shotley eateries have their ups and downs. Might be there at the weekend so be nice to know.

Called in there April last year, food was OK, but small portions and big prices. Not been in since.

Butt and Oyster is OK, but the Rose in Shotley is the best pub i've been in on the peninsular.

The Rose is presumably still run by Sarah who used to run the Shipwreck when it was excellent. She and the whole staff got the boot and it has seldom been the same since. At one time Sarah would come and pick people up from the marina and bring them back after eating at The Rose but Shotley banned her.

May try the lightship in SYH instead.......

I've had (a couple of years or so ago) both similarly unacceptable food and an equivalent response to a polite request for a replacement. (And that was going in there ravenous after 17 hours on the helm with a failed auto helm, a failed cooker and only cheese straws to eat, so I wasn't being picky about the food!)

I avoid the place now because of that attitude (I can forgive the odd mistake or disappointment with the food). As I've said before, I can't understand how Shotley have allowed the situation to continue for so long.

I think she will still come to pick up, but maybe you have to walk passed the red line in the road near the Bristol.

I've had two meals in The Shipwreck this year. Very average. I'm glad this was posted as I now know there are alternatives not too far away. I would have gone back for more very average food but given the managements attitude the Shipwreck is totally off my list.

I was with Mathew when this happened and i have to say, it was absolutely disgraceful. The arrogance was unbelievable. I have yet to speak to a fellow berth holder or indeed a local resident, that has a good word to say about the management of the Shipwreck.

I like Shotley as a marina, all of the office/yard/workshop staff are first class. I cannot understand how the senior management/directors have allowed the management situation at the Shipwreck to go on for so long. The arrogance and unpleasant behavior towards the junior staff is shocking and embarrassing, it's rare to see the same bar staff or waiters more than once or twice. Just look at the situations vacant page of the website : http://www.shipwreckpub.co.uk/job-vacancies/ How can a small establishment have so many vacancies ?

I really hope the marina management sort this out, it's such a wasted resource.
