"The sailing yacht alongside has a crw of naval officers"

If the officer commanding the yacht was senior to the officer commanding the warship, presumably he was due passing honours.

Codswallop! No yacht / sailing boat is a commissioned ship - other than HMS Victory of course but she isn't particularly seaworthy.

Lets all beat up the Navy again. There are prats in all professions, why should the RN be exempt?

Rant over!

The difference is other professions don't have two establishments which actively encourage pratness, i.e. Dartmouth and Collingrad.

Very lame. I see you list your profession as Merchant Navy. No Merchant Navy Officer or Crew has ever got anything wrong of course? I used to work for an international removal company that lost vehicles (fortunately only vehicles) on the Herald of Free Enterprise. As I said every profession has its prats and yours is no exception.

Heard this on the VHF on Monday, someone called up warship Edinburgh, with the information/warning (?) "the sailing yacht on your port side has a crew of RN officers". Why would he announce that? After this:

In case this happened again?

You sure it was Edinburgh ? To my knowledge she was decommioshed 5 or 6 weeks ago.

Could be that she is alongside in Pompey and the Grunters were looking for a call-round ie. wets :D

Not quite yet, she's just left Pompey bound for the Thames as part of the Battle of the Atlantic 70th anniversary commemoration. The ensign will be hauled down for the last time in early June (so I believe), although those nice people at disposals have already started stripping bits off her.

Every profession does, but in my humble experience as a Lt Commander, the RN seems to have more than its fair share, in fact in recent years it seems to be the way to get ahead.

What has a yacht / sailing boat not being commissioned got to do with it ?

Quite, a couple of years ago I can recall FOSNNI (Rear Admiral) receiving the salute from Manchester as he hurtled past in a bootneck manned Rib, he had the wife and kids with him too!

That is why I got out in 1989. In zone Lt Cdrs all trying to get promoted. With a smaller Navy the pressure must be worse so the good ones get promoted, the OK ones realise they wont go much further and go and get a job somewhere else leaving the prats. Saw it happening, knew I wasn't a high flyer so moved on! Just since leaving have found it is just the same in business.

Now replaced by in zone Lieutenants as automatic promotion to LTCDR has been stopped, which is a good thing. Of course the smaller fleet and fewer advancement opportunities has now led to lots of otherwise decent people being reduced to eating their own children in an effort to get ahead. Some always were like that mind. Me, well I enjoyed going on the razzle (and getting in trouble for the same) with my lads too much to take promotion too seriously!

Is there still much of a future with URNU? I'd heard all sorts of rumours regarding what their Lordships refer to as 'consolidation', i.e. cutbacks and closures? Bloody madness if so of course, as URNU is probably the most important 'first contact' for potential officers.
Apparently there is going to be some redeployment of P2000's or at least not replacing them once the accountants decide they're life expired. I seem to recall a few years back that URNU lost two because someone realised just how much fun the pongos and crabs were having doing sweet FA on 'deployment' in Cyprus, so they were snaffled for some holiday cruising, then London found out and they were sent to Faslane to spend their days chasing after the bombers. There was some official talk of them being sent to Akrotiri to enhance the capability of the Cyprus squadron, but well........ ;)

For me no, had to give up my position at Cambridge when I had a job in Yorkshire and they have refilled it. However the URNUs seem to go through this debate almost annually. I hope we don't lose them but who knows, the defence budget has several significant demands on it and I would not attempt to try and put URNU in the list of the most deserving.

Happy now just to be a social member and add 'God Bless Her' to the loyal toast as is befitting the oldest Lt in the mess!

Did someone mention a 'call-round' .... & wets!?

a call-round ie. wets :D

I'm in! ..... :D

& talking of doing 'strange things' to gain promotion etc .... I knew (sailed with) a chap who binned his Mrs to gain a commission (Spud M)
& a Cdr who was on his (if the Stwd's are to be believed) 5th marriage .... & the poor-lass used to 'hit the sauce' rather hard just to tolerate his company .... which led to him having the Stwd's carry her to his car & under orders placed her in the boot! ..... don't think that one lasted long either ...... (PP) if anyone knows him ...... ;)

But stranger things have happened at sea .... so they say!

Might it have been a polite warning that the yacht was going to dip, and should the ship not be ready and have to send some bunting tossing underling sprinting aft to the ensign staff, then much ribaldry and claiming of drinks would ensue next time everybody met up?
