This should be an easy 1 for you peeps in the know!
We are taking boaty down to farndon marina at the end of the month for 2weeks and will be leaving her there for long weekend trips out, so with farndon as a base, where are the best / scenic places to go / berth for a night ? Not to mention the best hostilarys to frequent ;):D

Should be able to get the gen at the skippers meeting next saturday ;)

Farndon is good... With several good pubs in the village... Including the boathouse which has moorings...

Newark town is quite good.. A good market.. Some very good restuarants along the main road that runs behind the castle...

A bit further up is Gunthorpe.. Plenty of mooring space... Tom browns is good... We also like Biondi which overlooks the lock and has outdoor tables... Good for lunch and coffees... There is also a excellent indian restuarant at Gunthorpe, and a good italian... All almost adjacent to the moorings... Not far from Gunthorpe is the village of shelford, which has a excellent local pub called the earl of chesterfield.. Very good food... East bridgford is justup the hill on the south side of the trent... Nice walk.. With another good pub, the royal oak.. No food there, but a good local shop, post office.. The walks around east bridgford, inparticular along the top of the embankment... Are superb with excellent views... Go across gunthorpe bridge to the south side of the river... Take the road to the left... Just past the marina is a walk up into a mobile hme park and go along there...

Further up river oyu get to the national water sports center area.. Not muchnabout...once you get up into the city proper at west bridgford there are a lot more options... West bridgford town center is vibrant.. If mooring above trent bridge i would go on south side of the river... There are a couple of good pubs and a nice restuarant right on Trent Bridge.

Hope that helps.

Btw... At farndon the boathouse does a excellent value early bird menu... The same lot also own tom browns at gunthorpe, and casa at trent bridge.

Nottinghams riverside festival runs from the 3rd to the 5th of august... And attracts aexcellent crowd of boats... Well worth while being moored up by trent bridge at that time as the fireworks display on saturday night is usually excellent.

Now that my dear boy is the exact type of info I was after. Thank you very much.
Any one else's 2p worth is still apriciated !

going up the trent myself from keadby (inland)from the 29th of this month.
if you see a red and white moonraker, give us a wave!!

Cromwell is good for a Barbie if its not too windy. The little shop in the village is closed now but the filling station has most things.Stoke Lock is nice (above the lock) also Hazleford well worth a stop, especially September time as there are loads of blackberries. If you cycle, there are loads of places to go to.As mentioned Tom Browns at Gunthorpe is good and they do an "early bird" We are lucky to have the Trent.Went to York 3 weeks ago.Arrived, moored up and that was last time we were able to move the boat until last wednesday so decided to come back.Naburn Lock gates were under water last weekend. I know there has been problems on the Trent but not as bad as York.

Farndon - Knots bar is on a converted ferryboat located on the marina - very good sunday lunch and more. Also in the village just upstream of the marina 'The Riverside' pub/restaurant. Fish and chip van at the post office on Fridays.

travelling upstream from Farndon...........
Fiskerton - The Bromley Arms (if you can find room on the pontoon, which is uklikley at a weekend , although there was a space today )
Hazelford - nice barbeque spot
Gunthorpe - lots of eating choices - like the Bondai (Italian). Gunthorpe very busy on Sundays and bank hols.
Stoke Lock - peaceful spot - moorings upstream , don't moor at the pub just downstream (underwater rocks reported).
Holme Lock - nice breakfast in the watersports centre - moorings upstream, watch for underwater shelf at part of the wall moorings ,which is marked.

Downstream from Farndon
Newark - moorings opposite the castle - lots off restaurants, pubs , cafes , some nice independant little shops, nice market town.
Muskham Inn - riverside pub
Cromwell lock barbeque spot

Strong flow on the non tidal Trent today - about 4.5 knots.

Thanks for that I will endeavour to check as many out as pos.
I had heard the Trent can run like that and if your not aware of it will catch
You out going into to farndon.

Even when the river is running as strongly as it has been recently, it's relatively easy to get into Farndon marina AS LONG AS you go in travelling upstream, i.e. against the flow.

Those who try to come in when going with the current can be a source of great interest, as there have been some very close shaves.:)

Its the same here at York marina when the river is in flood.
Other weekend provided some good entertainment with one boats stern skimming the the entrance banking with only mm to spare! They all most came in sideways !

I would definitely point you in the direction of Knots in the marina especially for their Friday fish chips and peas special.
I also like Torksey for their T bone steak at the White Swan but you will be coming by there on your way to Farndon?
Gunthorpe can be stunning though it can get busy (especially with all this sunshine)
Should hopefully get down at some point this week so if you see us give us a shout (Andante in Farndon marina)
Nick Heath:D
