The Reef - Film 4

Watched The Reef last night and although it's enjoyable, you have to question some of the decision making. It did underline the value of a proper grab bag though. Far more sensible than rummaging through a flooded cabin trying to put one together while going down!

I didn't have much faith in their EPIRB.

Well, you see when you just KNOW that you're not going to meet with a disaster and therefore would never use your EPIRB then there is no point in maintaining and stowing it properly.

On the other hand, a well stocked/easy to get at Grab Bag IS essential for rapid access to sustenance, mirror, wipes etc to save less-than-keen crew rumaging in the cabin(s) for their own "stuff"...................

how likely would a keel be broken off like in the movie? apart from that the acting is a bit dead

Judging by the state of his EPIRB I reckon not a lot of diligence applied throughout the boat. So possibly he had never checked his keel bolts. Just a hypothesis...

The acting perhaps is "a bit dead" to portray "just ordinary people" going sailing as opposed to highly experienced, super fit, mega-rich yachtspeople.

Dunno, just a thought.

On a MAB very, very, very unlikely; on some other boats it has been known to happen without hitting anything. Far be it for me to name any marques - it may be construed as criticism and some owners are a wee bit touchy if they think I am insulting their choice of plastic fantastic.

to be honest i thought my keel had damage after running aground myself last june. all looks in good condition though

did lose the rudder though

You haven't seen my keel bolts!

Seriously though, I'm with you, the damage looked completely unrealistic. There would be, I would guess, a ripping of the hull in general around the keel and bits sticking up, etc. Kind of got the film off to a bad start for me. The rest was a little silly.

But based on a true incident. However, HOW TRUE is open to conjecture!

ok got to the shark now, the acting is a lot better now and the shark behaviour seems realistic attacking thinkings its attacking a seal, i have always read i shouldnt be scared of sharks. as long as u dont look like its food u should be ok?
