The Queen of the Grand Banks Schooners

Sacrilege!

Ken....that is the late, but immortal, Stan Rogers you're referring to.

Author, and singer, of some of the finest, most moving sea-songs ever.

Well, the voice grated a bit to start with, but the image was so fantastic, I watched it twice with sound turned off. Will try to sleep on those pictures (tho with my luck, there will be pirates , F9 and French fishermen in the dream)

Now, that's what I call SAILING!
I was lucky enough to sail in a miniature version called Taurua, a 45 foot gaff schooner, from Singapore to Malta via The Seychelles, Aden and Suez in 1962. Even in such a tiny ship it is so different from any other rig.

Wow! Found myself holding my breath watching those beauties effortlessly gliding along. The assorted headgear was also fascinating!.

Cornishman,

I have owned Taurua for 36 years.

Can we connect so that I might learn more about the voyage in 1962?

-Just doing my bit to keep old threads alive -

The lyrics included the line “does she not take wind like a living thing?”?

which links nicely to …
… the sailing classic Captains Courageous ,Captains Courageous (1937 film) - Wikipedia
filmed in 1937, those old schooners seriously powering along in half a gale of wind, soundtrack optional .

Taurua is one gorgeous boat!

I have to take issue with that, though. You don't own a boat like that, she owns you - you're just her willing slave :)

Stemar,
Thanks for your quite apropos statement that we do not own Taurua ; she owns us.
Do you know if Cornishman is still active with this website? I fear he may have passed on. And with him, the history of the 1962 voyage of Taurua .
