The QE2, Pics of her Launch, 1967.

Great photos. One of her former tenders now named the KU-EE-TU has been operating out of Dromineer on Lough Derg as a trip boat.

I do recall a channel crossing many years ago in the fog, without radar and we were crossing with some friends who were a little behind us (out of sight). They called us on the VHF to warn us of a little boat approaching on the stern quarter. Out the fog appeared the QE2 like a ghost, all painted grey on its way to the Falklands.... breathtaking... I am sure I still have a couple of pictures, will get up into the loft and see if I can find them!

I have a pic, somewhere, of me standing in my dufflecoat at the sewerage works just to the East of Dumbarton Castle watching her (Q4, not my dufflecoat) being towed down to Greenock for the fitting out.

My first car was the Austin 1330GT, which I presume was similar? A 100 mph engine in a 60mph chassis. To be fair, it always felt fairly safe as it did have 100mph brakes too; my other transport at the time was a H1A Kawasaki motorbike, which had a 100mph engine in a 60mph chassis and 40mph braking system - now that was a scary bit of kit!

So's not to hijack the thread completely, I would record having onced sailed on the QE2 in I think 1987? It was it's second 'maiden' voyage, from Bremerhaven around to Southampton (It was a freebie as I was then employed by Trafalgar House who owned Cunard at the time) I do remember that her being sent to a German Yard for refitting was not a popular decision with the British Public at the time; nor subsequently by the Company either. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I was working for Traf House at the time of the refit we had a crew of ceiling fixers on her, you were'nt one of them were you?
 
Fantastic- what a superb piece of British heritage.

Are the guys with he Ford Anglia(?) related to you - they look like a couple of gangsters :D
 
A truly magnificent vessel. Many thanks for showing the pictures. The car (an Austin 1100?) looks just like my first one that I paid 110 quid for and then 12 months later had scrapped as the subframe had rusted, the car sagged on the handbrake cables and locked up the back wheels! Them wer't day, aye.
 
Superb pictures, especially the last one as it's me on my last boat, the Maxum (blue/white hull) in the foreground. We had a brilliant day on the final farewell up the Clyde along with my Dad who had taken me to the launch when I was only 2 yrs old.

Anyone know what the jets were flying overhead?
Clearly well before the Red Arrows era, and not Hawks, also curious that there were 13 of them?:confused:

From memory they look like bucaneer S2's
 
I worked in the Rolling mills at Scunthorpe when they got the order for the steelwork.Was fortunate to go on her a few times.We were cruising back from the Med. and in the Bay of Biscay ,when the skipper came on the Tannoy and said "there,s one of those floating hotels ahead,we,ll open her up and show them what a real ship goes like.Yes we creamed past it,quite something. !
