Re: on second thoughts...

Most recent posted to thread to top is a good idea. Argued for this a few months back. Kim surely if a thread has been added to, being sent to the top makes it most recent and relevant?

Re: on second thoughts...

I'm very neutral on this, having heard arguments both ways. I suspect we have a fairly board-literate gathering on this thread and, from memory, dateslip caused the most confusion to the more occasional users and visitors (bearing in mind that it involves those browsing as well as posting) and I did have to spend quite a bit of time explaining how the system worked on support threads and e-mails. On the flip side we want to keep reguloar posters happy too...the usual conundrum!

I'll see how all the comments develop and then take it from there. A trial of a day or so is easy to organise, so that might be the next logical step.

Sensible idea Kim, give it a go for a week and see what response you get.

Certainly doesn't seem to be anyone vehemently opposed to the idea and quite a few in agreement. It certainly seems to work well on other boards.

Re: vote against, I think

It's never worked like that as far as I can remember?

anyway, t'would be a bit difficult imho cos the list would keep inverting and flipping with each post. I have some software like this it's a blimming pain.

Make it as an option tho if you really want.

BUT that things I asked for ages ago about the sublevels/indents wd be better. It should be

post
first response = A
first response to A
second response to A
third response to A
second response = B
first reponse to B
second response to B
thrid response to B

....whereas at the mo it is

post
second response = B
third response to B
second response to B
first response to B
first response = A
third response to A
second response to A
first response to A

which is a bit weird. Oh yes it is! In fact I wd storm out and slam doors to make the point more forcefully except that the software is free, and it's sunny outside!

Re: on second thoughts...

Please just find us an OLR that works with this forum. It'll save me a fortune in phone bills, I can set it to just read headers or text that I haven't already seen. I can write considered replies, use a spell checker and not suffer 36,000 baud rate when I am at home!

Re: Is there an OLR?

OLR's only work with newsgroups where an entire thread is pre-loaded down. Here the threads are kept on the YBW Server and only pulled down as you read them individually.
Mind you, you have reminded me, I haven't been to any Newsgroups in a long long while and have an excellent little known OLR called 'OUI' by Dvorak.

Re: Is there an OLR?

I remember in the early days of Compuserve, when they wanted us to stay on line and pay accordingly, someone came along with some cunning OLR's which allowed us to pull down the headers in one or more forums, mark those we wanted and on the next pass we would get the full text of those messages that interested us. But then how would IPC earn advertising revenue - mind you - AOL own Compuserve so what 's sauce for the goose.

COR! I can remember that too. You have really dated yourself now :)
It was so expensive in those days an OLR wasn't a luxury it was vital. My copy of 'OUI' dates from those days although I have updated it several times since then. OLRs are still good for reading newsgroups and dealing with response at leisure.

Or get yourself a broadband connection. Our "old" Freeseve dial up connnection at typically 36KB was like the ark compared to this NTL broadband thing. And cheaper too. £25 per month and on line 24hrs a day if you want and connection at 512KB. Brilliant.

Re: And I thought I was a saddo....

Interacting with fellow Range Rover drivers is as interesting to me as interacting with most fellow boat owners. The average Range Rover driver would probably wonder why anybody would want to cruise up and down the River Thames looking at the same scenery every weekend. I happen to have a Range Rover to tow my boat so I don't have to do that....... What do you do, apart from taking the piss out of everybody else ????? Perhaps you should don your blue, or is it pink? anorak and visit some of the Land Rover web sites, you might learn some manners, they wouldn't dream of taking the piss out of you!

Happy boating........ I was only joking...... Honest ...Tee hee, tee hee.

Down this neck of the woods we are lucky to even have a phone line with enough amplification to reach the exchange. The last telegraph pole is in the wood opposite this house.

And....

We're off the page and forgotton about.

So what was the decision Kim, are you going to try an "most recently updated threads to the top" version for a week and see how it fares?
