It is true that no mater how hard you try to be considerate to other users on the water , the actions by a few including some of the clowns on scuttleburks can affect the way you react to situations on the water.

I realize Fireball posts tongue in cheek and perhaps there should be a new smiley in circulation

Or perhaps a little icon could be placed against the names of the regular pranksters ?
Like the A you have , perhaps an example of FIREBALL

Dear Mr DAKA ... do you have a larger version of the smiley you are proposing as it is little more than a brown/black mush on my screen. ..... or is that the aftermath of the dinghies you've just run over? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

this sort of thread achieves nothing.

If we all reported incidents we had seen over the weekend, we would need a new forum just for the purpose. Let me offer two examples:

- last Wednesday, a raggie motoring through a dinghy fleet about to start, in a river, told them to get out the way - totally out of order.
- yesterday, 50 high speed dinghies in a regatta, a big RIB with two 275's on the back goes right through the middle at high speed - totally out of order.

etc etc etc.

Stuff happens - learn to put up with it.

I was told (quiet sternly) to slow down when approaching a rowing race.

Thing is - I was stopped and just holding nose into current with bow thruster /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Probably as well you can not see it , you would no doubt treat it as a medal of honour /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

How many dinghies/raggies do you think I have scooped up /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
do you think I have little silhouettes like the spitfires had on their side /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I have only ever had to peel one off THE SIDE of my boat, (I am sure you can remember ), can you see where you are going I have so far managed to avoid spearing one with the anchor.

[/ QUOTE ]Just as well - don't want to damage the anchor!!

[/ QUOTE ] Oh- is that what they are - I just thought you'd forgotten to clean the soot marks off your topsides ... probably too lazy, having a beer and getting in the way of legitimate racing!! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

...Regardless of 'rights', I would have thought it simple good manners and courtesy to avoid sailing through any kind of race...

Would you extend that idea to avoiding "motoring" through a race as well? I don't think you would get much support on here - Daka would never get out of Chi! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: Raggies Unbelievable stupidity, Pics

I think we can all agree that in an ideal world we would all give race courses (be they raggie or mobo) a wide berth.

The problem is that it's not always possible - be it a course that occupies the entire channel (e.g. Chichester) or a course that would involve such a large diversion that for what ever reason we can't do it. On that basis - assuming that some boats will need to go through courses - the only options are for the racers to have priority - the passing through boat to have priority for for col regs to apply.

Of these the col regs have to be the most appropriate so as long as the sailing boat was following col regs then everyone should know what was happening.

Calling him stupid cos he obeyed col regs rather than some random people in mobos that claimed to be marshalls is as arrogant as he may have been in sailing through the race.

Re: Raggies Unbelievable stupidity, Pics

It wouldn't work any other way. There are whole weekends of racing in the Solent every year - not just sailing but powerboat too. If there were attempts to stop other boats passing through the courses the events would never happen. So you have to have rules and the universal rules are Colregs which continue to apply to competitors and non competitors alike. The marshalls have no authority, they can only advise and my experience of some marshalls is that they can fall into the "keen and enthusiastic amateur" category and may not always be giving correct advice.
