The port/starboard rule. Why?

I would guess that the problem with the old term 'Larboard' was that it sounds too like Starboard, particularly on a dark and stormy night with the wind howling in the rigging;

" Ere Jem, did he say Starboard or larboard?" "Dunno Bill, think it was Starboardd" ""Orlright, starboard it is, then" - kerrrunch!

Wouldnt surprise me if that caused more than few accidents.
