The PLA tidal app

Yeah i downloaded it yesterday. Its not bad, but would have liked a feature for tidetables for the whole month to take offline. But hey its better than nothing...

Am I the only one having difficulty with it? After the splash screen, just a black screen. This is on two different Samsung phones, a Galaxy III mini on Android 4.1.2 and a Galaxy 4s mini on Android 4.4.2
Have filled in a feedback form so hopefully the bug will get fixed.

+1 Black screen here too :(

Strange, there are a few users reporting issues with it, works perfectly on my Samsung (Galaxy edge S7 running squashed donut or whatever the latest android system is)
Hopefully they'll get it sorted out soon/

That's good !

I bought Navionics app (UK and Holland) (about £15) for my phone which gives full charts as well as tide tables (predicted not live) for the different recording stations on the River and elsewhere. It does not need a data connection if the map has already been downloaded to the phone.

Well I've had a reply from the PLA. The problem is older versions of Android more than about three years old. Which I take to mean version 4.4 or older. They are talking to the developers to see if it can be ported to the older versions.

Meanwhile he says "We’re open to ideas for a phase II release, so let us know what would be useful."

Edit: They've just updated PLA website with compatability/device requirements:

* For Apple - Requires iOS 8.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone (iOS 8.0 was released in September 2014).
* For Android - Requires Android 6.0 or later. Compatible with Android phone (6.0 was released in October 2014).

The app just drew my attention to the difference between actual measured and predicted tidal heights at my current port (Tower). That difference is currently slightly over a metre: unbelievable!

From the curves shown on the PLA site to which the app directs me for more information, this seems to a combination of a lower than predicted max height at the HW that was a couple of hours ago, and that HW occurring slightly earlier than predicted.

Can anyone cast some light on how the forecast accuracy can be so poor these days? When I anchored in the shallows off the Tower a couple of months ago, I was relying on much greater accuracy than that. (And to be fair, at that time my tidal curve of the day resulted in a negligible difference from predictions.) So it's alarming that the predictions could be as much as a metre out.

Low pressure can make a substantial difference. Also wind direction, as well as the flow from Teddington. Doris has been quite a powerful low pressure system. If this had been a spring tide period they would have had to use the barrier.
