So...the whole box needs surrounding with sponge...not too difficult, it could have short little legs so the bottom could be cooled too;

...question is, would increasing the thickness of the foam, risk beginning to insulate the interior?

I'm thinking, if a bag of liquid could be suspended above it, it could drip steadily onto the foam, at approximately the same rate it evaporates...

...so, fairly thin foam with minimal insulative properties, could be as effective as thicker foam, heavy with water? Or not?

The Osokool was entirely made of permeable material except the door so that water from the trough permeates it entirely and evaporates over the complete surface area. I think insulation would be counter productive as it would prevent the cooling being transferred to the interior.
