docks today in Southampton & is named on monday by our present Queen,sorry if you all know but should be worth a look,we are coming from Poole on sat so might be a bumpy ride,5 to 6 easterly!!!! see you there,regards mm1.

Called in to Algeceras on way to Southampton to have a paint touch up. Due into Gibraltar on the second cruise as the Canaries are the maiden voyage. Look forward to getting up close and having a good look when she docks here!

Any Pictures appreciated!!!

Is it gonna be the QE3? and is it bigger and grander than the Queen Mary?

I note its only 14ft longer then the liner I was on in May

Looks like they've done a nice job. Always tricky to get the proportions right on an aft cabin boat.:)

Not been to that facility, but I did have a meal with Tommaso Milanese, then Condirettore Generale, some time ago in Edinburgh.
 
In this case, I guess he invited you to see Monfalcone.
And aside from the previous jokes, if you have such opportunity, I'd really recommend a yard tour. Absolutely impressive.

Wouldn't it be nice if Cunard could build a ship in Britain again?

Ooops, just remembered, there are probably no shipyards left in Britain that are capable of building a Queen Elizabeth.
Harland & Wolff in Belfast probably could in theory - http://www.harland-wolff.com/portfolio.asp?id=1 - but they haven't had any recent experience of cruise ships (although to be fair they have had a few since Titanic)

Fincantieri http://www.fincantieri.it/ certainly seem to have pretty much collared the market for bigger cruise ships.

Re the yard in St Nazaire that built Queen Mary - they are now owned by Aker and Alstom, and recently built a new vessel (the 5th largest in the world apparently) for Norwegian Cruise Line - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chantiers_de_l'Atlantique

Its interesting that yards in Europe are very competitive in the world arena for very complex and specialised ships (especially cruise liners), especially when you think that most of the cargo ship and tanker tonnage seems to be built in the Far East nowadays as it is so much 'cheaper'.

I understand they tried to get it built in the UK ,but no one could or wanted to do it. Sign of the times.Pity really as I worked at the steelworks where most of the steel for QE2 came from.
