The New Look Walton Yacht Haven

Approach To The Walton & Frinton Yacht Club Quay

Whether planning to enter the Walton Yacht Haven or just stopping over for a pint or a bit of shopping in town, vessels regularly pitch up on the quay.

Plenty of water alongside at high tide but as can be seen below, the famous Essex mud has advanced east into the channel off the stbd post. Therefore, the best water is direct from the north cardinal channel splitter to the port post but be aware behind the port post there is a concrete slip.

Views of entrance to The Pond from seaward at low tide and the departure channel with 2 lead marks for lining up done the channel, when departing. Pictures taken 28 May 2019.

The total aperture is 20ft; the concrete shoulders (which are topped with rubber matting) are 4ft on either side, leaving a 12ft wide central flap(with a triangle marking the centre point).

When the tide is the same level as the water in The Pond, the centre flap drops forward onto the entrance bed to permit access. If you beam approaches (or accedes 12ft), wait until there is sufficient depth over the concrete shoulders so you can float over them.

If you want anymore detail PM me and I will be happy to oblige.

Hi, so how long would you envisage, say a 1.6m draught being able to stay alongside? IE is it quick 5 minute pint or a leisurely 90 minutes? TIA

A good hour either side of high water. More on springs.

But first time around I would float up with the tide to arrive about 1.5 hours before high water, accepting the possible touching on soft mud but leave shortly after high water.

Pressure and wind direction can have a significant impact on the height and time of high water.

If planning to stop over in The Pond, the cat flap opens about 1 to 1.5 hours before high water (Harwich CD +3.3m) and 1.6m draught boat would have no problem entering as soon as the flap opened. A green flag is flown when the flap is open.

But as the cat-flap only opens on demand, it is important to phone Bedwell’s and book.

Hope this helps.

Ps I have added additional, up to date, pictures of the entrance on #2

Loved our visit to the pool when we had Erbas but I'm really not sure I'd have the courage to try it with Pagan! (1.65m draught, at least, and 12'1" beam). Still, we haven't got around to visiting Titchmarch as yet :o

Fully understand your concerns.

As you see, like the club house, (with 24/7 shower and toilet) The Pond has changed dramatically, with more pontoon moorings, where there is plenty of water but it is still possible to lay along side the wall on the left - on springs, the tidal range is about a meter. The bottom is soft mud.

Provided you enter at high water on a large tide, draught should be no problem and you should have sufficient water over the concrete shoulders (about O.7mtrs).

We keep our boat permanently afloat in The Pond.

Forty years ago, my father and I kept our small boat in the Yacht Trust Basin, before we took a mooring in the Twizzle.

The biggest boat I saw enter the cat flap was this one:

“Drumbeat”. And I kid you not!

18.4 metres LOA, 2.2 metres draft, (plate up!) 4.4 metres beam...

Well Drumbeat is not here now so must have escaped - reassuring✔️ :encouragement:

"Well, she is a centreboarder" ... an absolutely stunning boat.

Talking of the pond, I expect we have all seen the old photo of the windmill where the club house stands but has anyone got a snap of the old houseboats where the pond is now?

I am forced to conclude that I'm a wimoy cowardy custard with an atrophied "go for it" gland :D

That is one stunning boat!

The Future.

Ref The W&F and the new look Haven.

I have taken a number of pictures on a neap tide and next week will get some on springs.

I will edit and put all of this detail in a new thread on this forum.
