He must have had a bad weekend on that occasion, as I recall him rafted alongside us at the Folly, where he took an inadvertent trip overboard.

I always went inside the Varvassi wreck in my racing days and never found it to be a big problem but may have been lucky with the amount of "traffic" taking the same route. With the tide still ebbing stongly it makes a huge difference in the distance travelled and sets you up for going close in at Scrathells Bay to keep out the worst of the stream. Once you are sure you are clear of Goose Rock, you can go in very close to the lighthouse to minimze distance and ensure you are clear of the wreck. However if there is a big swell running there is a possibility of being "dumped" in a trough and this would be my main reason for not taking this route.
