I have no way of knowing when it is necessary. I clip on when I think it might become necessary. By the time it is necessary it is also too late to change things.

Saw the body of a LJ-wearing diver who had been thrown off a dive RIB as it turned sharply to meet a wave face on. Unfortunately the sharp turn positioned the motors just where he had fallen. Maybe if he had not been wearing a LJ he might have been submerged and the props might have missed him?

Saw the body of a diver who did a roll-in entry - 1, 2, 3, go and in he went. Stayed under for a couple of secs and just as he surfaced, a lumpy swell hit the boat causing it to swivel and the skeg hit him on the head. Would he have been better off entering the water with an inflated BC?

But I really baulk at having to wear a LJ in a lock.
