What does the panel think?
Ipswich to Hamble.
All looks pretty simple:
Cork Sand YB => Long Sand Head => Kentish Knock => E Goodwin LV => S Goodwin LV => Dover.
Ive been passed Long Sand Head onboard Full Circle and it was "interesting"

Dover => Dungeness => Eastbourne.
How far off Dungeness?
The chart says it can get iffy with the outfall from the power station.

Eastbourne => Beachy Head => ......
here I am seeking suggestions from those that know.
Do I go through "The Looe" below Selsey Bill or head further south?
It then looks a fairly straightforward run past Chichester, Portsmouth, along the "North Channel" into Southampton Water.

Any comments/guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Selsey and the Looe Channel

Best at slack water or even when both wind and tide are together if you have the power. Certainly not a place to be in foul weather or after dark, with lotsa unmarked and/or submerged crab pots. Otherwise no probs; I use it regularly to retreat up the Arun, a haven of tranquility compared with the Solent!

25+ Kts of power if I need it ....

but .....

do I want to be taking a mobo anywhere that has submerged pots?

Use the Looe Chan. can be very choppy but just hang on, and be aware of the submerged barrier between Horse Sand Fort and the shore, either use the outer Dolphin marker or keep South of the Fort.

A bit overstated, there's not too many!

There has not been a S.Goodwin LV for several years, there's a big cardinal buoy there instead. Not so sure there's an E.Goodwin LV either, can't remember if that's been replaced too.
Why go east of the Goodwins? Long way round! I'd go through the Gull Stream.
And what's this about the outfall at Dungeness being iffy? Nothing on my chart. I go past Dungeness about a half-mile off, usually, and anyway you need to stay outside the Stephenson Shoal after that if the firing range is active, and you'd be miles away from the outfall. If there's a warning about it on your chart I would think it applies to e.g. to angling dinghies etc.

We have sailed out and back through the Looe each year for the last 5 or 6 on our summer cruise. We need the tide right as we only make 5kts or so. Shown is a typical track. We usually try to sail over "the Hole" just for the giggle of watching the depth gage but we only make one time in two

Coming from the east, if you get close and it looks too choppy, you don't have to go through the Street - you can find one of the two swatchways to the south, if you are an East Coast sailor and have an up to date chart and GPS!

The charts I am using 5606/5605 series.

Major floating light in position:
51'13.3N 1'36.4E
51'07.9 N 1'28.6E

On a very rough calculation its only another 3-4 miles around the outside which misses any shallower water........

Admiralty chart 5605.7:
Dungeness Power Station Outfalls
(50'54.55N 0'58.15E)
Water from these outfalls causes turbulence which may be hazardous to small craft.
But you are saying I dont need to worry about them.....

This chart show our usual track heading east; quite often we turn north just east of Dung, to anchor. We stay south of Stephenson shoal to avoid being chased by range safety boats.

The outfalls buoy is very close in. - few hundred meters. On the track indicated we seem close enough to be able to shout at the anglers on the beach and still clear the buoy.

Ah, I forgot I had a 5605 chart pack.
E.Goodwin is indeed a Lanby sort of thing now. I think I last saw the old LV sitting off Shotley.
3 or 4 miles is 3 or 4 miles. Gull Stream is no problem to an East-Coaster (ships use it!) unless weather is so awful that maybe you are not at sea anyway.
I have never seen 'turbulence' off Dungeness other than what is usual! Passing the point a half-mile off and routing outside the Stephenson Shoal means that you are far far away from the outfall - I really do think that warning refers to very small craft, like dinghies. And hasn't Dungeness power station shut down now anyway.

agree.. we usually get close enough to Dungeness to be able to shout at the beach.... its fine...

Also, the Gull channel is easy, and also usually a lot flatter than outside the Goodwins, so a better option for a mobo.... In fact I don't remember ever going around the outside other than when crossing to France from Ramsgate

I'd also use the Looe channel (have done so on many occasions) unless it was very windy and horrid!

I just spotted an anchorage sign in the middle of the words "practice area" /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

whats that for /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

target practice /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Thanks for the comments guys....
any other info/tricks would be appreciated as I will almost certainly be doing this single handed....

For the Estuary crossing bit, i'd go up Black deep and through Foulgers Gat..... would save a good few miles, and is also a bit more interesting from a nav point of view....

Also, as mentioned above, mind the submarine barrier as you head towards Pompey!

After the fuss made when the Round Britain Power Boats hit the sub barrier it was well to the front of my mind and I had already checked where it was. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Dont see it being a problem as I should be to the south of it anyway.
