Warning 102 pages.

Should have appeared years ago in tandem with a curiously absent plan for housing development.
After decades of prevarication and downright wilful neglect from a previous administration desperately not wanting to frighten the NIMBY Sea Horses.
A plan for the future of The Medway and its environs, might disturb a few fender huggers but now at least somebody has had the cohones to stick their head over the combing.
Meeting in MYC on Tuesday 17th Feb.

All they need is the money to do it

A nice earner for the consultants, what time is the meeting?
Think around 7pm and folks can drive past all those piles in the mud at Upnor.
Which should have been removed ages ago.
One of the defendants claims in court was that no plan was in place for house boats.

There is and was some funding available.
However funding could not be applied for due to the fact that a plan for the future of the Mudway had not been proposed by the local council ie Medway.
Apparently and finally a plan has now been proposed and out for consultation.
No plan, no money, even if it was there.
Worth a read, mentioned is the lack of access from the shore the sewage from a particular section of the community and the lack of consultation/cooperation between the myriad of organisations with a oar in the pot.

Medway Council have found the funds to employ 3 folks totally tasked only with the Medway and every aspect of the river.
The funding is only for two years and if some proven results appear, further funding will be sought.
Subjects raised was the sewage coming out of Hoo Marina, two useless piers at Strood and Rochester and security at Sun Pier.
The general feeling at the meeting was lets give it achance and if your about to start moaning about wasting money, that fine, just please dont use anything that might just come out of this.
Everyone both commercial and leisure has been contacted and invited to join in, including some real pariahs.
Am not aware of any other local authority having an department purely to make the most their boating area.

Ps the PS Waverly will be returning to the river in September, Neptune willing.

One of the jobs has been advertised and already with applicants.
Anybody who knows the main room in the MYC clubhouse, it was packed including our local ex MP who some are aware runs a business on the Medway.
There were one or two , quite important organisations , able to spend grant money, who had been ommitted from the councils contacts lists, who put their hands up to mention they existed.
Any organisation feeling left out is welcome to contact Medway and say they would like to stick there oar in.
Council will be looking for small user groups to get together to encourage use of the river.
This is not just boaters but but even those just wanting to walk or sit on the river bank, simply lack of access was a prime problem.
Mentioned was the next time that somebody wants to build anything along the river, the closest the inhabitants can get get to water should not be vertically down 30ft of sheet piling. ?

My own interest would be to help arrange a small group of folks and club vessels to greet the PS Waverley this year.
Always a few souls out to watch her come in but a more organised welcome might be nice, even making skippers aware would be a step up.

Hopefully something good happens and resources are channeled towards the projects. I spent 12 years in the Medway at MDL Chatham and the river has a lot of potential but resources are needed to achieve those and protect the area.
