The Med - ogaryo wants to berth there next year

If you did fancy spain Genus Marine have a 10m x 3.5m berth in Torraveija at €1600 per year. Electricity and water are on top but at just over £1000 it doesn't sound bad. I think they have pool wtc there as well

By way of weather update, here is SofF on 5 September just gone (which I just posted in the drone/quadcopter thread). St Jean Cap Ferrat

The Balearics and SoF seem to be the two hotspots of the Med aficionados. Its easily understandable why, since we know both very well (family had a house in the Balearics and SoF is not a long drive from Montreux). However we have chosen the Adriatic/Ionian, there are many reasons for this:
- fewer boats (or they get more scattered around)
- infinite choice of islands
- cheaper berthing costs (especially in Apulia and Greece)
- probably more reliable service (I never had to fly somebody in)

Being most of the time in Frankfurt, we have perhaps better flight connections to this part of the Med than the Brits. We place the boat close to a good deserved airport (last year Zadar or Split, this year Corfu) and use the many spring bank holidays to do some little extended cruises. Otherwise, the boat is always moving around for extended holidays. We change its wintering place every year and never had problems to find space for our boat. For sure, it’s for me an additional effort of planification, but SWMBO is happy if we keep discovering new places. We do not use the boat from mid-July until end of August, then it is crowded everywhere and too hot so we prefer going to the Alps. Yes, summer holidays in continental Europe can also be very enjoyable :-)

The boat is right now in Preveza, but the lack of flight connections makes life difficult for us, i.e. we cannot just jump on the plane for an extended week-end. We'll see where we will end next year... If you have other questions regarding the Adriatic / Ionian, please go ahead! BartW and Deleted User are also the ones to ask.

And for dessert, a couple of pics showing the variety of this area:

Deleted User mentioned in a previous thread he thought pure cost (without depreciation) being around £30K per year and i am sure others will be the same or higher. lets remove fuel which is of course all relative (aside from the fact that it seems to be more expensive per L than here) the financial and time cost of having the boat in the med would for us be too much to even consider.
Er yes Deleted User did say that but he also qualified that by saying those were his costs ie for a 50-60 footer and for a 30 footer, the costs are going to be considerably less. I can say categorically that without too much looking, you could find a location for your boat in the Med where it costs you no more to keep it there than in the UK. San Carles has been mentioned but then there is also pretty much anywhere in the Adriatic and where I am presently, S Sardinia. I will pay €8000 for the whole of this year to park my 63 footer in S Sardinia, there are regular flights all year round from the UK and of course the weather might as well be a different planet. I'm guessing it would cost me 2-3 times as much to moor my boat in the Solent and as far as I'm concerned there is no contest. There are 2 areas where your costs will probably be higher than the UK. Maintenance is one simply because you can't just pop down to your boat and do a few jobs yourself so you will probably pay somebody to do some of the jobs you might have done yourself in the UK. Then of course there is getting there but if you plan ahead flights can be very cheap

I don't like to rub it in but these photos were taken the very same day that there were floods and storms in the UK

Come on, whats stopping you?;)

Croatia is lovely but the big issue from the UK is out of season flights are almost non existent. Plus unlike from Germany, the drive is a two day affair.
That is an issue but as Hardmy's photos show, it really is a fabulous cruising area, the best I've come across in my limited Med boating experience but yes youre right, there are probably 3 downsides to boating in Croatia. The first as you say is winter flights from the UK; AFAIK Dubrovnik is the only coastal airport operating year round flights otherwise if you want to get to central and northern coasts you have to fly via Zagreb (note to Jack Haines - Zagreb is the capital of Croatia, not Dubrovnik;)). The second issue is maintenance; it is more difficult to get stuff done on your boat because the service infrastructure just isn't as well developed as the W Med (solution - take your boat to Italy over the winter as I did). The third issue is the winter weather; it is colder than the W Med in winter and therefore the boating season is a few weeks shorter

And what about flights between Corfu (Greece) and the UK? Seems that only Dec-Feb hasn't direct flights to the UK. Otherwise:
Ryan STN: Su/Tu/Sa
Sleazy LTN: Su/Tu/We/Th/Sa
BA LHR: Su/Mo/Th/Fr
Sleazy LGW: Su trough Sa

Our cruising will end this year on 04.10.2015 in Preveza (S-Corfu) and I hope that the season will last a bit longer there than in Croatia. @Deleted User, at the time you kept your boat in Croatia, until when was the weather OKish for boating?

I 100% agree with you, for the winter time it is advisable to move the boat to Italy (well this time I give a try to Greece). Last winter, I had mine in a boatyard near Bari (lots of Ryan flights from HHN all year around) and went down 3x during the winter to fiddle on the boat.

We were there 4 seasons and of course the weather was a little different every year but the reliable weather would start in early May and end in early October. It was surprising how quickly the weather changed in mid Oct often going from warm settled weather to cold rainy days in a short period of time and then of course the Bora wind blows more often in the winter. Of course you can still have mild days in the winter but I remember once visiting my boat near Split in January and desperately searching the local shops for a fan heater to keep the boat warm (the reverse cycle ac had broken down)
Yes I guess Corfu cruising would be longer but I understand it rains a lot in winter there too?

You don't have to sell me on croatia - I love it and we may move the boat there for a season or so in the future

You will have lots to do before going any further than the Baldricks.
Believe me it will be several years before you feel the need to go any further.

And, yes, I agree with Deleted User, south Sardinia was beautiful - this year was certainly amongst the best cruising we have done.
And very cheap too.

That's what I hope. We've sigbed up for three years on the berth at any rate so we are comitted to SCM for at least that period.

Been lurking on this thread as I'm always banging on about SC. I moved my Targa 34 there in September 2008, without AC, it was bearable and a great boat but with longer stays in mind we moved to an F43 in Feb 2011.

Flights used to run regularly from Luton-Reus, in the early days there was free parking at Reus airport so we left SWMBO's car there which saved a fortune hiring cars!

In winter we tend to fly to Barcelona, its a two hour drive but motorway door-to-door. I actually enjoy the drive as it gets me in the mood. I am still working so don't get out as much as I would like, SWMBO has done 11 weeks this year, the journey is an easy one. I just booked flights last Saturday with Sqeezyjet for an 8-day trip for two in November, this time going Southend-BCN, total cost of flights for 2 plus car hire just under £70, astounding value at this time of year.

As Mike has said, Reus and Castellon are closest airports, I reckon (hope) it will not be long before others fly to the latter - hopefully from Luton! Aaaaarh LTN-REU, those were the days, we could get from door-to-door in 5 hours! Also check out East Midlands. Monarch/EasyJet/Ryanair just enter Reus first to see where they fly to...

I do believe AC is essential if you're out a quite a bit in summer, but we did manage OK with the Targa. I do miss flying around in it from time-to-time. So do consider taking your boat out by road if you can get a good deal.

Negatives mostly stated above: Mozzies at dusk/dawn, fouling, popping down to the boat, getting spares delivered, car hire more expensive in summer, frequent requests from family and friends 'are you going out to the boat soon....' we have had a lot of guests this year, grandkids arranging between themselves what they intend to do on the boat next year....

I really loved Torquay and trips up the Dart - would I bring her back - NO WAY! Positives are far too numerous to mention.
