The Med - ogaryo wants to berth there next year

On transport costs all my flights this year are on points. My wife come down from Scotland so mostly Easyjet. Nothing like being in a flight and thinking Jimmy Buffet had it right "It's 5 o'clock somewhere" have a champagne in the morning as you coast down to Nice.

We use a driver how charges us €50 from Nice Airport to Beaulieu and the same for return.

There are other opitions like the train and bus. Cheaper but not as easy.
 
Having just made the long chug from Troon to Antibes via a hol in Mallorca I can only say that so far it feels like the right decision for us after 30 odd years of UK/Ireland boating. Definate vote for Med and SoF in partic and Antibes in more particular. Not of course enjoying the ongoing I told you so for years from JFM of course.
As to research by all means if its fun to plan some warm hols but its a pretty simple process imho.
 
So far the research around basic logistics versus cost of berthing appears to be the biggest challenge.. anywhere I have found that has good all year round flights close to the marina = high berthing costs. the marinas that have acceptable berthing costs are not close to an airport with regular all year round flights. has anyone else good through this aspect and found the holy grail of marinas from this perspective?

Define "acceptable".
 
We were paying e7000 all in for a 12m berth in club de mar palma. This was a private let for 2 years. It is 15 min or less in a cab from the airport.

Infinity pool, club, resteraunts, free kids club with own building and pool.

The full rate is probably e 8500 via the marina.

Flights are cheap if booked in advance.

Just take the boat to france. Get it picked up and dropped in Barcelona. Probably £5000 or less. Don't like it? Bring it back. You will like it

Ok. Where I am (Port Vauban, Antibes, France) a 10 x 4 rental (which means about 11.5 x 3.85 in real terms) is €6060 pa, which meets your requirement if (when) the euro gets to 1.42:

I would caveat this by adding that getting an annual rental is not easy - but a monthly rental only adds about €100 pa, and there isn't much demand for this size of berth (mine was empty for most of the winter while my boat was in the UK) so in practice I think you'd be fine.

Reliable weather, plus fab cruising locally, plus loads of flights from the UK, plus only 20mins from airport, plus all-year-round town, plus an established forum presence here.

I haven't looked at the other ports locally - dyor - but when I last looked into this they were all broadly in the same ballpark.
 
Those club de Mar prices are good for Mallorca. Port adriano just round the coast want e7700 +iva for a 10m mooring
 
Jimmy, thanks for posting the link, do you know why the annual tariffs stop at 10m? As we are 14.5m does that mean that we then go onto the monthly tariffs? And any idea of availability for our size. If and when we make the move we would plan on staying down there for weeks or, more likely, months at a time. It may be that we drive down, any idea what the parking situation is?

I don't know why they stop at 10m; they did used to publish an annual price for 15 x 5 as well, but no longer. At 14.5m you are definitely in 15 x 5 territory (assuming your beam is somewhere under 5m); this is the most popular (= highest demand) size at PV, so hanging on to a monthly rental for the full year might require a bit of work. Forumite A&K is the expert on this - they've been renting a monthly 15 x 5 for years.

However.... as we are approaching the end of the leases for the berths at PV (31 December 2021), the asking prices to buy the leases has suddenly and noticeably collapsed, certainly for the 15 x 5 and 23 x 6 sizes, and isn't much more than rental value now. So, if you have the cash available and are planning to stay for a few years, then I'd just buy a berth (that's what I did).

As a renter, you can buy a parking permit (prices are on the tarifs page that I linked to above); if you're an owner, you get parking included. This varies according to the specific berth, but in my case iirc I'm entitled to two parking permits, including access to the private parking on Mole Sud.

Looking at the spec for an S28 its 8.81m LOA x 3.02m Beam. Am I correct in thinking that some marinas allow +10% in which case Gary could scrape by on an 8m berth which would only be €3312? Now that is cheap. Alternatively a 9m berth somewhere else may be a cheaper price than a 10m one at Port Vauban.

LOA is fine but beam is not. Typically the rule is that beam cannot exceed 97% of the stated berth size (to allow for fenders). Neighbours will be very quick to complain about overwidth boats, and the capitanerie does take firm action in these cases.
 
In support of jimmy. There is nil tolerance for being over width. You have two bollards - you MUST be between the centre point of each including fenders ( or half a fender as your neighbour will have fenders also.

Length, less of an issue depending on (a) the placement of the bow line - if you are over the top of it it won't hold the boat steady - you need it to be positively pulling the boat forward. The bow line placement in my experience varies quite significantly (b) how practical it is for you and your neighbour to get in an out of the berth taking into account the width of the fairway. Unless you take the p*** length should not generally be a major issue unless your neighbour is genuinely inconvenienced and complains.
