Got rid of the CQR at the beginning of the season and replaced it with a Manson Supreme. I now sleep well at anchor like never before!
The new anchor even passed the Dartmouth test. Never had a CQR hold in the anchorage there for more than a tide.

I'm also v pleasedwith my Manson, which replaced a copy cqr which never held in e coast mud.
My Fortress kedge anchor is also very good.

I sleep less well with the Manson Supreme than i did with a CQR, the Manson has failed to set or failed to reset on the turn of the wind more times in 2 seasons than the CQR in the 9 seasons before. May your luck stay with you.

Wow, that's bad news. I will continue to set the anchor alarm just in case!

Just because it's trendy and expensive doesn't mean it's good, if my anchor was solid gold with jewels encrusted and a voucher to tea at Buck House I'd still be up in the early hours looking out & taking transits when the tide turned, or every half hour in a gale !

My ( genuine ) Bruce has always been faithful, but no way would I leave the boat on it and bu**er off to do some shopping or something...

So why aren't you using a fisherman's? The Bruce was innovative when it came out in the same way the Manson and other hoop anchors are now. They're all fit for purpose, but have different characteristics and applications.

That's a blanket statement without any meaning. In settled weather I'd leave my boat anchored off Brownsea Island and bivouac in the dirt for a week's red squirrel stalking - with either its old CQR or its replacement Manson looking after the old girl - whereas in other places and other conditions of wind and tide, I could be compelled to stand a long anchor-watch.

My Manson did not come with jewels encrusted on it but it is a modern design and I believe it is a vast improvement in terms of holding power. If you believe the figures it certainly has better holding power.
I have suffered the vague holding ability of a CQR for 30 years or more with exactly the same fears as you about leaving the boat.
Now, I shop 'till I drop - and then sleep well!

I cannot imagine never feeling safe to leave a boat at anchor. It was part of the fun for me, going shore, exploring, sometimes for the day. Obviously you would not do that at all times and all places but to never do it seems very restricting. But we are all different I suppose and whatever floats your boat.

I have both a Spade (in the garage as I don't have suitably sized boat) and a Rocna and my experience of the new gen anchors is that they are a significant improvement, such that once set I really don't feel the need for anchor watch etc.

I have had a CQR and at times it has held extremely very well, but there were also times where it didn't reset properly or took a few goes to set. Other anchors I've used included Delta, Brittany, Bruce and Danforth. All have positives, but also negatives that I have yet to find with the new gen. anchors.

From Florida to BVI via all the islands in between, 10 months without lying to a dock and we dragged once (due to my inattention). No hesitation in going ashore, even for a couple of days at a time. Two CQRs on all chain.

Anchoring's a confidence trick - have confidence in your system and you sleep, doubt your system and you won't sleep even with the QE2's anchor holding you. That's one of the reasons anchor threads are so well attended, people seeking reassurance that their system is infallible.

It's both touching and alarming, the faith people put in salesmans' claims...

My Bruce has never let go, but even when it was the latest thing - and still used commercially - I like my boat enough to keep a weather eye and never feel relaxed if coming ashore leaving her at anchor; Rocna's and Mansons are not forged by Merlin...

I sleep best at anchor after a nice windy afternoon with the boat sheering about and snatching at the chain.

Then I know the thing is well dug in.

Unfortunately i can't switch back to the CQR because it has gone and a new one is a ridiculous price so i am learning to live with it.

In your situation, with such a bad experience with an anchor, I would buy a new anchor, not risk my boat and ruin my peace of mind for a few hundred quid!

2nd hand CQRs are frequently for sale and are not expensive, why not buy one of them? Perhaps you could do a swap on the For Sale Forum and trade your Manson for a CQR, that wouldn't cost you anything. I reckon you would get plenty of takers.

it wouldn't be of a size suitable for a 44 or even a heavy 39 footer would it?

Hi Nick, it is a 15kg one (S80) that came from my RM880.

Spec says up to 35', but given how effective it was I would trust it much more than a 15kg Delta that supposedly goes up to 45'
