The London International No Boat Show

Glasgow tale, possibly apocryphal. A man is parking his car near Ibrox on a match day when a young boy walk up to him...

Wee boy: Mind yer motor for a pound, mister?

Man: No thanks (Points to big, fierce alsatian dog in car)

Wee boy: (calling to his friend across the road) Haw, Erchie, have a look at this. It's a dug that can pit oot fires.

Or the alternative ending...

Haw Erchie..huv a look at this. It's a dug that can blaw up tyres!

Went to LIBS yesterday and was amazed at how few yachts were being exhibited. No HRs, No Malo, no Dufour and even the Bavs and Bennies etc. were down to two or three boats

How selective your memory seems to be :D

Southerly had 5 yachts on their stand, Oyster 2 yachts, Najad 1 yacht (they don't usually take a boat) Jeanneau 4 yachts, J boats 2 yachts, Hanse 3 yachts.

There were still over 30 odd yachts (over 30ft) there So it wasn't exactly a desert on the boat front :)

Parking at ExCel

We travelled to the show last Saturday. Drove from south Manchester. Not a bad journey considering the dreadful weather conditions. Upon (near) arrival we found that ExCel chose to treat motorists with the same contempt as does the government and other officialdom.

We queued for the best part of an hour in standing traffic to complete the last few hundred yards of the journey.

I asked the happy chappy taking my £10 to use his radio to call for more help given that there was a huge queue of very pi**ed off people behind me. "Yeah, I know" was his completely disinterest reply.

Incredibly frustrating

If they think that Libs is in a terrible spot.... with easy motorway access to 5 international airports... attached to one of the largest cities in the world, direct LRT connection... two hours from as far north as Nottingham... Wait till they try Liverpool..

Don't know how you reckon to be able to get to ExCeL in 2 hours from Nottingham. It's 2 hours by train from Solihull (near Birmingham) and a further hour by underground and DLR to ExCeL. If I'd gone by car there would have been the traffic jam on the northern section of the M25 to suffer - probably would still have taken 3 hours.

puzzeled

They will have to pay the neighborhood kids £1 to "Watch yer boat mister" over night..

When I used to cover Anfield I used to do them a deal... 50p up front another 50p when I got back....

Still had me hubcaps stolen one day... and he still wanted his extra 50p.

Where do the hubcaps fit on your boat

From Solihull you might want to come across on the A14 to the M11....Straight down the M11.... about 10 minutes gets you to Excell.

I use the A1 -A14- M11....

Almost bang on 2 hours.. done it a few times.

But I would have thought if the M25 is clear then it shouldnt be three hours...

OK, so given that Scousers are doing the twoccing and burglaries while Lahndahners are doing the muggings and robberies, who's doing the sexual offences? It can't all be Norfolk, surely?

The Welsh? Baaah, Baaah, Where's me Mam, Bleat, etc.
Poster stands back, ducks his in laws clubs made of laver bread and runs for Offa's Dyke (does that name have any Sex@*l indicators or is it historical?)

Seriously, we much prefer SIBS- boats on the water, good atmosphere, loads of visitors even when weather bad, meet friends just like you did at Earls Court.
Summer cruise season fresh in your mind, drooling at possible upgrades, etc to boat you both talked about afloat, before the winter bills reality hits and you settle for just one thing that really needs doing and paying the houses heating bills.
Went to ExCel first year and once since- soulless, just a hanger with boats, etc on show, just did not cut the mustard with us two, though we met some nice people from our trips again.

LIBS

Personally speaking, getting to Excel is no problem and the parking beneath is a breeze as long as the ticket machines perform. I enjoyed the show and the venue and being less crowded this year certainly helped.

A broker for one of the main yacht brands was telling me that they always do more business at Southampton. He reckons that Paris is far and away a better show than London and the venue allows full height masts rather than dummy things as per LIBS. If London goes and Liverpool happens, Paris in early December floats my boat! The Mersey or the Seine?? Hmmm

I wonder -

what it would be like if the dates were swapped.
Libs in the autumn and Sibs in the winter?

Libs -
Boats in the water, activities in the dock, things happening all round the huge dock.

Sibs,
moderately indifferent weather, getting soaked passing from tent to tent, road access almost as bad as Excel - you notice that in the winter..
