Well I had all the books, the Hiscocks, Vyaging under sail and cruising,Adlard Coles Heaven Weather Sailing books on how to sail the. Atlantic, round the world etc plus those large format colour pictures of daring do.I bought them in hope and out of interest of how I might navigate the oceans. They now sit on the shelves reproaching me for my cowardice and beingeasily distracted fro not breasting the waves, there is still time to sail round the ria.I suppose YouTube have taken over from books in tempting Voyagers but my books left more to the imagination which was probably my downfall.??

Yes. Got all those, but the difference between us is that I always knew that I wouldn’t sail an ocean. I don’t look at YouTube sailing videos, or blogs, and it’s a while since I bought a sailing book, on the grounds that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.

Almost my entire library of that ilk got left with the boat in NZ ☹

I didn't lose a copy of Heavy Weather Sailing; I wouldn't have one aboard, a dreadful tome, the crew starts reading that and you'll never get them to sail anywhere.
True, but it's still a book for the skipper to read and add the methods used to his mental and practical bag of tricks when said crew are updating their wills and asking why the hell they let themselves be inveigled into such a daft enterprise

I got all those books. Was thinking of going places, then I did a couple of round bits of Britain trips, Ullapool to Blyth round the top and separately down the channel. Meanwhile I was regularly sailing around between the outer and inner Hebrides.
Then I realised pounding mile after mile in one direction was not my interest.. certainly not say across the Atlantic.
So they are on the shelves in this room. Now accompanied by, many books on history, railways, and sailing of other sorts..
I'm now sailing each weekend, normally 4, 1 hour races on a Sunday, stop for a chat and coffee between..

Jeez that sounds like hard work and over an hour between brews as well  ; crossing the Atlantic you get to drink coffee while you sail along and no 'pounding' to windward either.
Some years ago I left La Gomera on a Jenneau 45 and spent 5he first 7 days heading to Antigua close Hauled. My 6 crew had obviously read about trade wind sailing judging by the moans, complaints and general grumpiness. However, as soon as the wind finally went aft that was forgotten in hours and I could stop beating them. :) honked with rain too. Late November.
