The latest money grabbing scam

There is no conspiracy. Things do change. And the person collecting fees is the harbour master. I checked him and his receipts out with the town office.

I think it is fine if anyone chooses to refuse these berths/moorings. I believe it is shameful to sneak in/out and steal as I have witnessed. And I believe it is harmful to our community to spread false information. Publicizing accurate information is good for all of us and what we all want.

Your original posting, "Squeaky," was inaccurate, and simply hearsay. I do not know about you and the rest of this community, but I do not care for hearsay. As we have circumnavigated the world I have found that hearsay is one of the most dangerous pieces of information.

My attempted and blocked posting was an effort to set the record straight.

I will see if this posting hits the thread...if not it will be my last posting.

Just at the end of the town quay at Selimne is a two story building . On the top floor is the harbour master office and the local town council rep plus a secretary . theyalso provide showers and a loo . The harbour master told me the fee on the restaurant quays is less that the town quay and they only charge because the town supplies water and electricity .
i think that is a fair situation

We have just returned to the UK after 8 weeks in Turkey. The only restaurant quay where we were charged was at Karacasogut in Gokkova Limani 40 TL per night. There was no room on the town quay. I believe that this restaurant quay used to have some connection with Marti Marina so I wasn't entirely surprised as it was set up as a marina! and not perhaps the usual restaurant building a wooden pontoon affair.

Jetty charging

Gentlemen, just to be clear.

Twenty five years ago it was easy to get a license for a restaurant jetty. Few did as there was no point (i.e. no penalty). The situation then changed where it now takes years to get a license and the authorities fine the restaurant owner (although he argues it's nothing to do with him) for having an illegal jetty on their land. They reluctantly pay the fine as they need the custom. They are told not to maintain or improve the jetty, which of course they do periodically. There are also different laws relating to whether the jetty is wood (temporary) or concrete. As the jetty is technically not theirs, they have no basis for charging. They may (although rarely) charge for electr4icity, which of course most do not have.

The local Tax inspectors (Maliye) do occasionally come around and ask boaters if they have been charged, usually in response to a complaint which is generally as a result of village politics. Certain jetties have been 'taken over' by the Belediye (council) and are no longer illegal and hence now charge. In the Gulf of Hisaronu they are:

Selimiye-the new town quay and all the formerly illegal jetties are now controlled by the council who charge. Part of the revenue is paid to Marmaris Belediye who funded the new jetty.

Bozburun - Has been a formal harbour for many years

Palamut

Hiyat Buku / Mesudiye

Places who do not (or have not) made a charge are:

Serce Limani, Captain Nemo's Farm restaurant (mooring buoys)
Bozukale, Ali Baba, Sailior's House, Loryma
Sogut, Captains's table, Octupus.
Dirsek, Ali's
Sailors Paradise (Kosebache) Sailor's Paradise
Keci Buku/Orhaniye Dogan Hotel. Luna Begonvil, Buk, Sali's, Iskele, Kadir.Palmiye.

I understood Knidos was illegal, but I will check and report back

Palmiye Marina. This is a changing situation. Earlier this year the jetty was extended and will be extended further this winter. A large plot of some 80000 sq/m was purchased as a boat park. It is now a fully legal Turkish Marina, which is currently not charging. In due course there will be a boat lift and paying berth holders. Its charging status may then change. It does have the best facilities in the bay, although the ATM has been removed and re sited in Marti Marina (apparently still without funds!)

If you are in any doubt as to whether the jetty is legal or not, ask for a receipt (Fiche or Fatura) which they will not normally want to give. Insist and you will discover whether its legal or not. A Fiche is an unofficial receipt given normally where the organisation has not charged KDV (VAT) a Fatura is a full Tax (inc VAT) invoice. All Turkish businesses are KDV registered as there is not 'below the threshold' status in Turkey.

Enjoy your cruising in paradise.

Hi,

We have just spent 2 nights on the Luna Begonvil jetty in Orhaniye. We ate in the restaurant each night - the food was exceptionally good by the way - but last night's bill seemed rather high. As we couldn't understand the bill we asked the waiter, and interestingly there was a 35 tl charge for 'yacht services'. We complained as we had spent over 100 tl each night for dinner for two and had been told that if we had dinner the pontoon and elec etc was free. Very quickly the waiter returned saying the boss said to take the charge off. We asked another couple who were there 3 nights ago if they were charged this but they said no. A shame really to leave feeling they tried it on, as the restaurant was excellent and the showers were better than a lot of hotels.

Knidos Charging

I promised to check whether Knidos was a legitimately charging bay. There is no charge to anchor, but you do have to pay on the pontoon. I believe the cost to view the old ruins is 8TL per person. Although few of you will have the opportunity to drive along the coast road to Knidos, I was 'unlucky enough' to have a callout there a couple of weeks ago and the view from above is fantastic, well worth the climb if your legs are up to it.

The restaurant is run by the same people who operate the Dolphin restaurant in Palamut, right next door to the superlative 'Le Jardin de Semra'
