Whoooaaah! Watch this puppy explode over the next 24 hours as cold air hits mild air and.... boom!

The action is now starting as a cold pool of air from Greenland is now heading Southwards towards the Iberian peninsular. Later today the upper air trough which is over Spain will start to compress and 'sharpen' (bit like turning from a U shape to a V shape). With all the cold air piling in from the Northeast, it has to go somewhere and is forced up the other side of the trough. It's all this action which then starts the system rotating and the new low is born.
During Wednesday the thundery low will roll Northwards and with warm air feeding the beast not just over France but also mild, moist air from the Bay of Biscay, this system will be crammed to the brim with moisture.

I'm not too impresssed with metcheck forecasts - they seem to be little melodramatic at times and don't seem to be too accurate - not for Argyll at least

Try Harbourmasters' Forecasts as well. I've been following them and they seem to be on the ball so far. Theyr.net is excellent but a couple of weekends ago, they got it totally, totally, absolutely wrong. (The only time I've ever seen them way out.)

I've just looked at them (08.00 Wed) and they are still showing yesterday's forecast for my area. I'm a pretty good forecaster myself for what happened yesterday, it is today I'm not so good at and I need to know that today, not tomorrow!

I now only ever look at metchecks headlines - their area forecast are a load of .....
Theyr is the one I now always look at. The tabloid weather forecaster

Looking out my window they have the wind forecast right, looking at the Met office rain radar they have the rain right on cue. I generally find them more accurate than most.

Yesterday WeatherOnline city forecast for Southampton gave the wind as "NW 2 (gusts to 81 knots)" so I guess they're hedging their bets. Haven't checked it today.

I have always looked at our own Bracknell forecasts and compared them with the normal forecast from WindGuru. Windguru provided the best case, and bracknell, the worst. An interpretation somewhere between the two has been fairly good.

However Windguru now have an experimental system based on MM5 model configured for area covering central Europe. Model has 27 km resolution, is calculated 4 times per day and produces forecast for 72 hours. Harbourmaster forecast...

...for Chichester reckoned Force 5, Force 4 later. According to Chimet and Cambermet at 1015 it was Force 6, gusting 7, at 1330 it was Force 8 gusting 9.

I think I will stick to the Shipping Forecast, which foretold 6 to 8, perhaps 9 later.

Me, I'm at home and the boat is snug up a drying creek (I hope...)

I find there headlines good - but I have ceased to look at the area forecasts as they invariably seem to be doing something completely different

They seem to have something wrong with how the publish - sometimes the area weather makes no sence at all. I used to email them when it was obviously wrong - frankly now I only look at the headlines which have quite a good accuracy - but are always sensational!

Wow!, there's one hell of a difference between the standard and experimental forecasts (at least for this particular next 72 hours, for the south coast locations I've selected)

Pity the experimental doesnt also include rain. But it does seem to be a much more accurate forecast of these "unsettled times". (= yucky weather)
