She was driven ashore in the hurricane and heavily damaged, but did not break up. With the nationwide publicity of the radio broadcast and later newspaper stories, aid came from many sources including his home city of seattle. A fund was raised for rebuilding the now-famous yacht. Once the boat was rebuilt, Long continued on through the Caribbean to Panama, and sailed the long passage uphill to Seattle, completing his circumnavigation.
Dwight and his brother, Philip, then sailed Idle Hour to Honolulu just before the war. In 1944, Philip sold her on behalf of Dwight, and the Idle Hour stayed based at the Honolulu yacht harbor until sinking off Oahu Island in 1974.
