I'm thinking about sending me teenage son off for a week with The Island Trust this summer.

Johanna Lucretia

Does anyone have any first hand experience with them and can recommend? Or perhaps an alternative option I haven't thought about?

He's obviously done a fair bit of sailing with me, but hasn't got any tickets yet. A week onboard will get him his Comp Crew and then he can do the Day Skipper course next summer...

Many thanks,

Pete

No direct experience of the ship or organisation, but have done ten days on a larger tops'l schooner and can only imagine what a great experience the Johanna Lucretia would be for a teenage boy presumably with other teenagers from all sorts of backgrounds.

No experience of The Island Trust. I sailed with the Ocean Youth Club (now Ocean Youth Trust) a few times and know a couple of skippers. They appear to offer experiences that are just as valid in the sail training space, but not the 'tall ship' experience. I see their boats out and about in all weathers, actually sailing, when the vintage fleet on the West Coast of Scotland are berthed. Note that Day Skipper on a 'tall ship' would likely be the Watch Keeper version as boat handling is excluded. Nothing wrong with that, but it is a difference.

I would recommend Ocean Youth Trust, but if he is looking for 'tall ship' experience rather than just big boat experience, then he would not get that. Either way, it is a great thing to do, and a fantastic leveller as everyone has to contribute to the running of the boat.
