You have me confused now Cliff. Are you a Scot or an Ulsterman or perhaps a Scot showing which side of a particular divide you are on??
Nonetheless a Brit though.

I have always been proud to be British, although passionately a Scot, and NEVER English.
A bit like my wife who is proud to be American, but passionately from south of the Mason Dixon line, and NEVER a Yankee.

As fervently Scots as I am, the Saltire is a flag of Scotland, but at sea is only recognised as an international sign for the letter M. As far as I am concerned, you may as well have stuck the Sots Nats emblem in the corner.

Technically I think the only merchant vessels entitled to fly the George Cross are Dunkirk "Little Ships" if you sail one of those then you should fly it with pride.

Other than that why should the George Cross be any more a mark of respect than the Union Flag (which of course you can't fly either) or the Red Ensign out of respect for the unsung heroes of the Merchant Navy?

Not divide the UK or for that matter the British Empire but as it has been said so many times before we do, its in our nature to "belong". Other wise why fly a club burgee, or any flag of pennant?
I thought we were talking about flags not the memorial events.
If we are whats wrong with as you say flying your flag of whatever denomination along with those of the Allied Forces.

Born in the North now an adopted Scot so not showing which side of what divide I am on - what the North Channel? Mull of Kintyre to Antrim? depends where the cheapest good whisk(e)y is available at the time.

Not quite true, something to do with the Derian expedition and the final battle with the Spaniards and the survivors being allowed to keep their colours which were the Scotish Ensign not the Saltaire nor the Lion Rampant, or so the story goes. - If you are interested PM me and I'll put you in touch with a character that has been researching this one for years and has the details. We can , and should show som individualism, even tribalism if you want to call it that but IMHO we should all honour at least one common flag on such a day. Others optional.
If we were all the same life would be so boring.

Tis good to belong to Clubs and the like but let's not lose sight of the BIG club that we all, well many of us, belong to. Perhaps not by choice but nevertheless....

Interesting point. Dun'no - sounds about right but I am sure some of the ex RN chappies will answer that one. Mind you you could always sneek up on the flotilla and see what everyone else is doing then you won't be the odd man out - oops odd person out. Have a wee look at some of the big grey boatties I am sure they will have their ettiquette correct or they wont be allowed back into the club.

I doubt if it's anything to do with elections; it's hardly a vote winner. More likely it's symbolic of reconciliation, and I'm glad to see it. All IMHO of course.

Qualifies you as a "chav" to fly the Ingeeerrrland flag. Must shave your head, get an ear ring, several tattoos, and a Peugeot hatch with a 4 inch exhaust.

The Union jack is the appropriate flag for what you want - or better still the EC flag since the EC was conceived to prevent a repeat performance.

Flags are flown as a signal, a means of communication. Perhaps worth thinking for a moment what message you are sending when you fly an "unusual" flag

The way I see it is the British nations are grouped together under one flag, the union flag. But we all have our own nationalities and a flag to go with that too.
So my boat wears the red ensign as British and I also fly the cross of St George as I'm English.
I see other boats flying the Scottish flag and some flying the Welsh flag. But we ALL fly the flag of GREAT BRITAIN with pride.
