Is this the most common cock-up in sailing ?

Be it on mast, deckware , grabrails or whatever.

Bad timing or are there other reasons ?

Did you by any chance visit the London Boat show and have a look at the largest Beneteau Oceanis? With particular reference to how you would sheet the jib on the starboard tack!

In my village we have a problem with fouled pavements,I imagine fouled jib-sheets would be slippery

Rite away

Being large (and benevolent) they go everywhere on port tack, thus ceding right of way to all others who can actually use starboard
