The thread started by Babylon, regarding allowing extra time for sailing to windward, is one of many with some unpleasant grumpy responses.

I have been struck by how various threads on the Scuttlebutt forum exhibit apparent short temper and lack of consideration.

In contrast the Motor Boat forum, which I look at occasionally, is more civilised. The PBO forum also seems better tempered.

These observations lead me to conclude that many occupiers of this forum are grumpy old people with little empathy for others.

Or have I been misled by trolls?

many fit your category

but there are also lots of splendid fellows

you only have to look at the preston to Brighton thread that there blokes here who would offer you lots of help

having just spent the past seven days with a wonderful forumite you have to take the rough with the smooth

there are negative twassocks everywhere

they do need to sail more

Despite the expansion of higher education many cannot, or refuse, to make the distinction between the subjective and the objective.

Hidebound statements put everyone's back up, and off it all kicks.

As you suggest there are also Trolls, a lot of odd contributions seem to have been made on the lost keel issue. People make things up, put words in other folks mouths, read only their own thoughts, present their opinion as fact and the cycle of aggression begins; heigh ho.

For every one wonky comment there are 100 people quietly watching.

Although I've not been quietly watching for some years, I have learned a great deal from the YBW forums and I hope I have, in return, contributed one or two helpful comments.

We need to be aware that someone who is really grumpy in one thread, on one day, can be really helpful and constructive in another!

There's nowt so queer as folk!

Your bang on the money

as a moboer turned raggie, I still dip into the Mobo forum, which is a great place to spend an hour perusing....
That being said, I have had some great advice on Scuttlebutt
Maybe we need to lighten up?
have a great weekend

Even the grumpiest response I've seen on PBO forums is primary school level when compared to some of the unmoderated US based newsgroups where slanging seems to be the norm. I do sometimes wonder though whether some people would be more restrained if they had to publish under their own name?

Normally arrogant requests get grumpy answers. The OP did not have any please, could, may or else. Courteous requests are more likely to attract civilised answers.

Sometimes I read someone even posting a subject and ending with "... Discuss". And I think to myself: "who do you think you are?"

Grumpiness and negativity.

Eg. Eg the One minutes silence. "Yes I agree" is a nice reply. Or ignoring the post if you disagree. Overtly being rude to people for wanting to pay respect to fellow sailors is what happened. Less is more sometimes chaps.

Good grief. Some very delicate souls on here. You shouldn't ever visit MUm'sNet.

Is it a matter that some sailors have been sailing round the world since WW2 and those of us who have not are not real sailors?

Also what is Lakesailor doing on Mumsnet (I believe Lakesailor is male?)

Some of the people who wanted to pay respect to fellow sailors didn't just want to pay respect to fellow sailors; they wanted to tell everyone that the were doing so and ask other people to join in. That takes it beyond a quiet act of personal remembrance - with which nobody could disagree - and leaves it open to response.

Mumsnet is hypnotically entertaining. If you ever wanted to see what happened to the girl gangs at school after they started wearing sunglasses on their heads in all weathers and driving 4x4s badly, have a visit. Start with "Am I Being Unreasonable".

Only from the insensitive. Or the overtly nasty. Too many of both on here.
